The Paklenica Gorge Trail is the classic 12 km out-and-back walk up Velika Paklenica canyon in Paklenica National Park, near Starigrad-Paklenica in Croatia. It takes roughly 4 hours return, climbs about 600 m to the Paklenica mountain hut, and is best treated as a moderate half-day hike. The route suits hikers who want a short Velebit mountain walk with canyon scenery, forest, rock-climbing walls and a staffed hut, without committing to the harder high Velebit routes.

Route Overview

Start at the Velika Paklenica entrance / main car park near Marasovici and follow the red-and-white blazed path up the gorge. The first ~2 km is a wide gravel path beside the stream, passing the lower-canyon bunkers and views of Anica kuk. Higher up, the trail steepens onto rocky switchbacks and forest path, with the Lugarnica forest house as a useful refreshment stop before the final section to Planinarski dom Paklenica. Return the same way. A steep side-trail leads to Manita pec cave; see the related Velika Paklenica to Manita Pec route. Stronger hikers can continue onto much harder Velebit terrain, such as the Northern Velebit Ridge Trail or the Via Dinarica Croatian section.

Paklenica National Park and Velebit history

Velika and Mala Paklenica were proclaimed a national park in 1949, making Paklenica Croatia’s second-oldest national park after Plitvice Lakes; walkers interested in that landscape can compare it with the Plitvice Lakes Loop. The park protects part of the southern Velebit, originally to safeguard Dalmatia’s best-preserved forest. The canyon is also a long-standing European climbing destination, and the wider Starigrad / Velebit area was used as a filming location for the Winnetou western films from 1962.

Notable highlights

  • Anica kuk (~350 m limestone monolith): The dominant wall in the lower canyon and Croatia’s premier rock-climbing crag, with 100+ routes. Walkers reach views of it in about 45 minutes from the car park and can often watch climbers on the rock.
  • Manita pec cave: The park’s only show cave, reached by a short, steep side-trail from the gorge. It sits at 570 m and is visited on guided tours through chambers with stalactites and stalagmites.
  • Lugarnica forest house: A forester’s lodge part-way up the canyon, run seasonally as a refreshment stop with simple food and drink. It makes a practical pause before the steeper forest section.
  • Paklenica mountain hut (Planinarski dom Paklenica): The turnaround point at about 480 m, with around 50 beds and hearty mountain food. It is open daily in summer and at weekends for much of the rest of the year.
  • Underground Secrets of Paklenica — the Bunkers: Tunnels dug by the Yugoslav Army in 1950–53 and opened as a visitor centre in 2016. They are an easy detour near the start of the walk.

Challenges to expect

This is not a technical hike, but the upper half is steeper and rockier than the easy gravel approach. Expect stone switchbacks, dirt forest path, stream crossings and around 600 m of ascent to the hut. Summer can be hot in the canyon, while spring and autumn are more comfortable. Navigation is straightforward on the red-and-white blazed route, but a park entry ticket is required at the gate.
