The Jetřichovice Lookout Trail is an approximately 8.5 km, 1-day loop from Jetřichovice in Bohemian Switzerland National Park, Ústí nad Labem Region, Czechia. It is a moderate day hike over Elbe sandstone, linking Mariina vyhlídka, Vilemínina stěna and Rudolfův kámen. Expect forest paths, meadows, steep rocky sections, wooden steps and iron ladders. It suits reasonably fit walkers who are comfortable with heights; it is not suitable for prams.
Route Overview
The route starts and finishes in Jetřichovice village, about 15 km north-east of Děčín, so no end-to-end transfer is needed. The standard circular walk follows Czech blue and red tourist waymarks through meadows and forest, passing St John of Nepomuk's church, Kočičí kostel, Poslední soud, Koliště rock wall and Pohovka junction before linking the three main lookouts. Rudolfův kámen, at 484 m, is the high point. For nearby Bohemian Switzerland planning, compare Edmund's Gorge to Hřensko; for more Czech sandstone terrain, see the Kokořínsko Rock Formations Trail and Hrubá Skála Rock Town Circuit.
Kinský Lookouts and Romantic-Era Tourism
The three Jetřichovice lookouts were developed as a romantic-era tourist attraction by the Kinský family, former owners of the Česká Kamenice estate. Rudolfův kámen was named in 1824 after Prince Rudolf Kinský; Mariina skála was opened to tourists in 1856; and the former Black Wall became Vilemínina stěna after Rudolf's wife, Princess Vilemína Kinská. The circuit is now one of the signature walks of Bohemian Switzerland National Park, which was established in 2000.
Notable highlights
- Mariina vyhlídka / Mariina skála (428 m): A former fire-watch rock opened to tourists in 1856 by Ferdinand Kinský and named after Maria Anna Kinská. Its replacement wooden gazebo, reopened in 2007, gives a broad view over the sandstone landscape.
- Vilemínina stěna (442 m): Formerly the Black Wall, later renamed after Princess Vilemína Kinská. The clifftop viewpoint looks across rock towers and the surrounding forested sandstone country.
- Rudolfův kámen / Rudolf's Stone (484 m): The highest point of the route, named after Prince Rudolf Kinský. It is reached by about 170 steep steps and gives a 360-degree panorama over deeper Bohemian Switzerland.
- Kočičí kostel and Poslední soud: Distinctive sandstone features on the blue trail, including the “Cat's Church” rock and a small rock-niche chapel. They add interest between Jetřichovice and the lookout climbs.
- Kinský naming tradition: All three main viewpoints are linked to members of the Kinský family, who opened these rocks to visitors in the first half of the 19th century.
Challenges to expect
The difficulty comes from steep sandstone sections, exposed-feeling viewpoints, carved or wooden staircases and iron ladders/rungs. Steps and rock can become slippery in rain, snow or ice, so footwear matters even on this short loop. Navigation is on Czech blue and red tourist waymarks, but stay on marked paths: this is national-park terrain with no wild camping or fires.
