Velika Paklenica to Manita Peć is a 9 km out-and-back day hike in Paklenica National Park, on the southern slopes of the Velebit massif in northern Dalmatia, Croatia. Allow roughly 3 to 4 hours round trip, including the guided cave tour. The standard route is moderate: the canyon-floor path is graded and partly rocky, but the final ascent to Manita Peć is steeper, narrower and rougher. It suits sure-footed hikers who want a short mountain-karst walk with a clear objective.

Route Overview

Start and finish at the Velika Paklenica canyon entrance / main car park inside Paklenica National Park, near Starigrad-Paklenica. The route follows the main canyon-floor path past the visitor centre area, through the limestone gorge and towards Anića Luka, a green plateau beside the rocky stream. From the marked junction, a steeper serpentine trail climbs across rougher talus slopes to Manita Peć, then you return the same way. The cave is visited by guided tour only, with tickets bought at the cave entrance. Paklenica National Park and Manita Peć

Paklenica National Park was established on 19 October 1949 to protect the Velika and Mala Paklenica canyons and the southern Velebit. The wider area is also recognised within a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Manita Peć has been receiving visitors since 1937, when the internal cave path was first laid out. Unverified claims about prehistoric occupation of the cave or the canyon as a historic trade or wartime route should not be relied on for this walk.

Notable highlights

Manita Peć cave (570 m): The only show cave in Paklenica National Park open to the public, visited by guided tour of about 30 minutes. Inside are stalactites, stalagmites, columns and flowstones, with the cave remaining around 9°C year-round.
Anića Kuk: A near-vertical limestone wall rising roughly 400 m from the valley floor opposite the cave viewpoint. It is one of Croatia’s best-known climbing crags and dominates the view across the canyon.
Velika Paklenica canyon: The main gateway into the park, cut into the southern Velebit limestone. The walk follows its steep-sided gorge and streambed before climbing to the cave.
Anića Luka: A green, semicircular plateau reached after a rocky waterfall and stream. It makes a natural pause before the steeper turn-off towards Manita Peć.
Cave viewpoint: The terrace at the cave entrance gives a broad outlook over Anića Kuk and back down Velika Paklenica canyon.

Challenges to expect

Expect rocky limestone underfoot and a noticeably rougher final climb to the cave. The upper path is steep, narrow and has no handrails, so sure-footedness matters, especially if wet. The cave is cool at around 9°C, even in summer. Guided-tour opening days vary by month, and the cave ticket is separate from the Paklenica National Park entrance fee.
