The Hydra Island Coastal Walk is an easy coastal day-walk on Hydra (Ydra), a car-free island in the Saronic Gulf, Greece. The main Hydra Town to Palamidas route is roughly 9 km one way, mostly flat, and suits hikers who want sea views, swim stops and simple logistics rather than a strenuous trek. It follows stone, gravel, dirt and paved sections through Kamini, Vlychos and Plakes, with water taxis available for the return.

Route Overview

Start at Hydra Town harbour and follow the north-west shore towards Kamini, Vlychos, Plakes and Palamidas. The walk is point-to-point if you finish at Palamidas and return by water taxi, but many walkers treat it as an out-and-back, especially if stopping for beaches and tavernas. The Hydra Town to Vlychos/Plakes section is shorter at about 3.5 km, while the full named coastal route to Palamidas is roughly 8–9 km one way. Some hikers add a short inland lane via Agios Konstantinos to make an easy loop. For longer Greek waymarked routes, compare the Andros Route or the E4 European Long-Distance Trail Greek Section.

Hydra’s Maritime History

Hydra’s coastal paths once linked fishing hamlets before motorised transport; the island still bans cars and motorbikes, so walking routes remain practical as well as scenic. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Hydra grew wealthy from merchant shipping. At the start of the 1821 Greek War of Independence, the island committed a fleet of roughly 150 ships and produced naval figures such as Andreas Miaoulis and Lazaros Kountouriotis. The stone mansions above Hydra Town harbour date from that era.

Notable highlights

  • Hydra Town harbour: The walk starts among stone captains’ mansions ringing the port, built on Hydra’s shipping wealth. The Lazaros Kountouriotis Mansion, now a museum, recalls the island’s role in the Greek War of Independence.
  • Kamini (Kaminia): A small fishing harbour west of town with a pebble beach and tavernas. A nearby windmill featured in Boy on a Dolphin, and the village is linked with Leonard Cohen, a long-time Hydra resident.
  • Kamini stone bridge: The path crosses the small arched Kamaroti bridge just beyond Kamini. It is one of the old stone bridges that make this short coastal walk feel more historic than a simple beach path.
  • Vlychos Bay and Agia Paraskevi chapel: Vlychos has an organised pebble beach, tavernas, an old arched stone bridge and the little Agia Paraskevi chapel set on a rock beside the sea.
  • Plakes: A tiny settlement beyond Vlychos, reached by a shadier section of path. It has an organised beach, hotel and restaurant, making it a useful turnaround point.
  • Palamidas: The usual far point of the walk, with a quiet pebble beach in a sheltered bay. The historic Bulgaris manor and an old boat careenage are nearby.

Challenges to expect

The walk is easy, but it is exposed. Shade is limited, especially between Kamini and Vlychos, and summer midday heat can be fierce. Expect some rocky or stony sections, occasional steps near Kamini, and paved or cobbled stretches through the hamlets. Navigation is generally straightforward, though side paths and unsigned intersections make a map or GPS useful on detours. If you want a more archaeological mainland route, see the Ancient Mycenae to Epidaurus.
