The Rovinj Coastal Path is a short, easy coastal walk south of Rovinj old town in Istria, Croatia. The full old-town-to-Cuvi version is about 8.5 km, while shorter promenade-and-park loops of about 5 km are common. It is a relaxed half-day walk, usually taking 1.5–3 hours, with minimal ascent and easy T1 terrain. It suits families, casual hikers, dogs and anyone wanting sea views, shaded forest paths and swimming coves without committing to a long-distance trail.

Route Overview

Start at Rovinj old-town harbour and waterfront, below St Euphemia’s hill, then walk south past the marina and large seafront hotels towards Lone Bay. From Uvala Lone the route enters Zlatni Rt / Punta Corrente forest park, where paths loop around the low limestone cape via Cape Montauro, the old quarry cliffs, Punta Corrente meadow and Škaraba/Škarabica cove. The longer point-to-point outing continues to Cuvi Bay; many walkers instead make a loop around the cape and return through the park. No transport leg is needed if you are based in Rovinj. For bigger coastal objectives, compare the Adriatic Long-Distance Trail or the Cres Island Coastal Path.

How Golden Cape Became Rovinj’s Forest Park

Zlatni Rt’s wooded character is largely due to Georg Hütterott, a Trieste-based industrialist who bought land around Lone Bay, Montauro and Punta Corrente from 1890. He planted native and exotic trees, laid out promenades and planned a grand health resort called Cap Aureo, but died in 1910 before it was realised. The area was declared a protected natural rarity in 1948 and gained forest-park status in 1961. Cape Montauro’s cut limestone cliffs are an old quarry linked to building work in Venice and other lagoon towns.

Notable highlights

  • Rovinj Old Town & St Euphemia’s Basilica: The walk starts by Rovinj’s old harbour, below the hilltop Baroque basilica. Its Venetian-style campanile dominates the skyline and gives the route a clear landmark.
  • Zlatni Rt / Punta Corrente forest park: A 52-hectare protected forest park on a low coastal peninsula. Shaded paths, pine and exotic trees, rocky shore and pebble coves make this the main reason to walk the route.
  • Georg Hütterott’s exotic plantings: Hütterott introduced species including Himalayan cedars, Douglas firs, cypresses and ginkgo alongside native holm oak and pines. The star-shaped grove of Himalayan cedars at Punta Corrente meadow is a distinctive feature.
  • Cape Montauro quarry: The pale cut cliffs on the seaward side of the cape mark an old limestone quarry. Today they add a rugged edge to the otherwise gentle coastal walk and are also used for rock climbing.
  • Swimming coves — Lone, Škaraba and Cuvi: The path links several clear-water bays and pebble beaches. Lone Bay marks the park entrance, while Cuvi Bay is the usual southern end of the longer walk.
  • Sea and island viewpoints: Open sections around the cape look across the Adriatic towards offshore islands, including the Sveti Andrija / Crveni otok group. Sunset is an especially good time for the sea views.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy, low-level walk, but do not treat it as a formal long-distance trail: distances vary by turnaround and loop choice. Navigation is straightforward on established coastal and forest paths, though the shoreline has rockier sections. July and August can be hot and busy; the forest is shaded, but the promenade has little shade. Facilities exist near the park, but carry water if walking in summer. For another short Croatian coastal walk, see the Dubrovnik to Cavtat Coastal Trail.
