The Hainich National Park Trail is best treated as a 7.5 km circular day walk in Hainich National Park, western Thuringia, Germany, rather than one official named through-route. It suits hikers wanting a moderate, well-marked forest hike through UNESCO-listed European beech woodland, with gentle undulation, muddy or root-strewn sections, and no hut logistics. The closest official match is the Wildkatzenpfad near Hutscheroda, roughly 7 km and usually taking about 2.5–3 hours.

Route Overview

This is a loop walk on signposted circular paths inside Hainich National Park, between Eisenach, Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza. Typical trailheads include the National Park Centre at Thiemsburg, beside the Baumkronenpfad treetop walk, and Hutscheroda, the start area for the Wildcat Path. Expect forest tracks, natural woodland paths, short surfaced-lane sections near trailheads, and occasional open meadow and hedgerow terrain around the Kindel. For a longer German forest itinerary, compare it with the Harzer Hexenstieg or the Harzer BaudenSteig; for sandstone scenery, see the Elbe Sandstone Mountains Trail.

From Military Zone to UNESCO Beech Forest

Hainich National Park was established on 31 December 1997 as Germany’s 13th national park and the only one in Thuringia. Its core forest survived largely because the area was used as a military training zone for much of the 20th century, leaving extensive beech woodland comparatively undisturbed. In 2011 it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. Today the forest is being left to return to a wilder, more primeval state.

Notable highlights

  • Baumkronenpfad treetop walk: At the National Park Centre in Thiemsburg, this wooden canopy walkway rises 10–24 m into the beech crowns, giving hikers a different view of the forest roof. It charges separate admission.
  • European beech primeval forest: The main reason for Hainich’s UNESCO status, this is one of central Europe’s important undisturbed beech woodland landscapes, recovering after decades as a military zone.
  • Wildcat Path and Wildcat Barn: The Wildkatzenpfad circular walk passes the Wildcat Barn exhibition and a viewing enclosure where the European wildcat, the park’s emblem, can sometimes be seen.
  • Hainichblick tower: A 20 m observation tower on the Wildcat Path, built in 2011, with views over the Kindel meadows and surrounding forest.
  • Spring wild garlic: In valleys such as the Brunstal, the woodland floor is known for carpets of wild garlic and woodland flowers in spring.

Challenges to expect

The walk is moderate rather than difficult, but do not expect a flat city-park path. Hainich’s short walks are graded medium by the park: there are gentle climbs, rooty woodland sections, and mud after rain. Navigation is straightforward on marked circular routes, but choose your exact official loop before starting because “Hainich National Park Trail” is a generic English label, not a single signed route.
