The Wolfgangsee Path is an easy 27 km circular day walk around Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut, on the Salzburg / Upper Austria border in Austria. Also signed as “Rund um den Wolfgangsee” or Wolfgangsee Rundweg, it suits fit walkers wanting a long but mostly gentle lakeside route. Expect paved, gravel and dirt paths, villages, forest, shoreline sections and one steeper climb over the Falkenstein. It is usually walked in spring, summer or autumn, with passenger boats available to shorten the loop.

Route Overview

The waymarked loop starts and finishes at St. Wolfgang im Salzkammergut. A typical direction follows the northern shore through Ried, climbs the Falkenstein cliffs, drops to Fürberg and continues to St. Gilgen at the west end of the lake. The return runs around the western Abersee basin, then via Gschwendt, the Blinklingmoos, Strobl and the Bürglstein headland back to St. Wolfgang. This is a loop, not a point-to-point walk between St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang. WolfgangseeSchifffahrt boats call at St. Wolfgang, St. Gilgen, Fürberg and other jetties, making bail-outs straightforward if timed well. For other Salzkammergut and Dachstein loops, compare the neighbouring Attersee Circular Trail, the Dachstein Rundwanderweg and the higher Dachstein Glacier Circuit.

Pilgrimage, steamers and the White Horse Inn

Lake Wolfgang and St. Wolfgang take their name from Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, who by legend founded the first church here in the late 10th century. The town became a major medieval pilgrimage centre, focused on the Pfarr- und Wallfahrtskirche above the lake. Later, the Schafbergbahn cog railway and lake steamers helped turn the Wolfgangsee into a classic Salzkammergut holiday lake, also known through the operetta “Im weissen Roessl” (“The White Horse Inn”), set in St. Wolfgang.

Notable highlights

St. Wolfgang pilgrimage church: The Pfarr- und Wallfahrtskirche stands on a rocky outcrop above the lake at the start and finish. It houses Michael Pacher’s fully preserved winged altar, a major late-Gothic work.
The Falkenstein: This wooded cliff between Ried and Fürberg is the route’s one real climb. It is also an old pilgrimage site, with the small Falkensteinkircherl chapel and a hermitage linked to the legend of Saint Wolfgang.
St. Gilgen: The village marks the west end of the lake and the turn onto the return side of the loop. It is known for its Mozart family connections and for the cable car up the Zwölferhorn.
Schafberg: The 1,783 m mountain rises above the north shore and is visible for much of the walk. The historic Schafbergbahn cog railway climbs it from the St. Wolfgang side.
Bürglstein boardwalks: Near Strobl, timber walkways carry the path around the rocky Bürglstein headland directly beside the water.
WolfgangseeSchifffahrt: The passenger boats shadow the walking route and are useful for shortening the day or returning from the main jetties.

Challenges to expect

The walk is easy underfoot but long for a day at 27 km. The Falkenstein between Ried and Fürberg is the main effort: a short, steeper, rooty climb of about 200 m. Elsewhere the route is mostly gentle lakeside walking on asphalt, gravel and hiking trail. Weather over the lake can change quickly, and the route is not winter-maintained.
