The Krka Waterfalls Trail is the signposted Skradinski Buk walking trail in Krka National Park, central Dalmatia, Croatia. It is an easy 2.0 km boardwalk circuit around the park’s best-known waterfall complex, taking about 1 hour to walk or 1.5–2 hours with stops. This is a short interpretive nature walk, not a long-distance hike: expect flat raised walkways, bridges, pools, watermills and viewpoints. It suits families, casual walkers and day visitors who want close access to Skradinski Buk without a mountain route.

Route Overview

The walk begins and ends in the Skradinski Buk area. Most visitors arrive from the Lozovac entrance, either walking about 875 m down to the falls or using the park’s free shuttle bus from April to October. Another approach is by boat from Skradin, with the option of a longer riverside access path of about 3,400 m. The official trail is a one-direction boardwalk circuit around Skradinski Buk, crossing wooden bridges over travertine barriers, side-channels and pools before returning to the start. Key stops include viewpoints over the cascades, restored watermills, the small ethno-village and interpretive panels. Watermills, Hydropower and Krka’s Working River

Skradinski Buk was not only a scenic waterfall: its waterpower supported local industry for centuries. From roughly the 12th to 16th centuries, mills at Skradinski Buk and Roški Slap ground grain and processed wool, making the falls an economic hub. In 1895 the Krka, or Jaruga, hydroelectric plant began operating here, one of the world’s earliest AC hydropower stations and historically important for supplying Šibenik. Elsewhere in Krka National Park are Visovac’s Franciscan monastery and the Orthodox Krka monastery, but they are not on this boardwalk.

Notable highlights

Skradinski Buk waterfalls (17 travertine steps): The park’s showpiece cascade spreads over about 800 m with a total 45.7 m drop. Boardwalks and bridges give close views of the flowing water and travertine barriers.
Travertine boardwalks: Raised wooden walkways run over tufa, pools and side-channels. They make the route easy to follow, but can be slippery when wet.
Restored watermills, or mlinice: Historic stone mills beside the falls once ground grain and processed wool. Several now form a small ethno-village with traditional craft displays.
Jaruga hydroelectric heritage: The 1895 Krka power plant was one of the world’s first AC hydroelectric stations. It links the walk to the early electrification of nearby Šibenik.
Interpretive panels: Educational boards explain travertine formation, geology and wildlife along the route. This makes the walk especially useful for families and first-time visitors.
Visovac monastery views, off-route: Visovac’s Franciscan monastery sits on a small island elsewhere in Krka National Park. It is reached by boat excursion, not from the Skradinski Buk boardwalk.

Challenges to expect

The main challenges are crowds, heat and slippery surfaces rather than distance. Summer is the busiest and hottest period; spring and autumn are generally more comfortable. The route is easy and low-level, but includes wooden boardwalks, bridges, stone or earth sections and some stairs over the falls. Swimming at Skradinski Buk has been banned since 2023.
