The “Slowinski National Park Trail” is best understood as the popular out-and-back walk from the Rąbka entrance near Łeba to Łącka Dune and the Baltic beach in Słowiński National Park, on the Baltic coast of northern Poland. It is about 11 km return, takes roughly 2.5–3.5 hours, and is easy to moderate: mostly flat forest track, with a short steep climb on loose dune sand. It suits walkers wanting a half-day coastal hike with dunes, forest and sea views rather than a long thru-hike.

Route Overview

Start at the Rąbka car park and ticket office, about 2 km west of Łeba. The route follows a firm forest path and former military road through coastal pine and birch woodland, passing the V-2 Rocket Launcher Museum around 1.8 km before the dune. From there it continues to Łącka Dune, the park’s best-known active moving dune, then can drop to the open Baltic beach before returning the same way. Optional seasonal electric “melex” carts run from Rąbka towards the rocket museum and near the dune. For longer Baltic walking, compare the Baltic Coastal Trail or the Hel Peninsula Trail.

Słowiński National Park History and Wartime Remains

Słowiński National Park was established in 1967, became a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere reserve in 1977, and has been a Ramsar wetland since 1995. The park is named after the Slovincians, a West Slavic people whose culture is preserved at the Kluki open-air museum elsewhere in the park. On this walk, the main historical stop is the former German WWII rocket test and launch site at Rąbka, now the V-2 Rocket Launcher Museum beside the forest approach.

Notable highlights

  • Łącka Dune (~42 m a.s.l.): The park’s most famous active moving dune. From the crest you can look towards the Baltic Sea on one side and Lake Łebsko and forest on the other.
  • Moving dunes / “Polish Sahara”: Wind-driven sand advances roughly 3–10 m a year, burying forest as it moves — a phenomenon rare on a European scale. The open sand is the route’s defining feature and the main physical effort.
  • Lake Łebsko (~71.4 km²): Poland’s third-largest lake, a brackish coastal lagoon and important bird habitat within the park.
  • V-2 Rocket Launcher Museum, Rąbka: A WWII German rocket test and launch site preserved as an open-air museum on the forest approach.
  • Baltic beach: Beyond the dune, the route can continue to a wide, wild stretch of Baltic coast before returning.
  • Coastal pine forest: Most of the walk is shaded forest on a firm former military track, a sharp contrast with the exposed dune and beach.

Challenges to expect

Navigation is straightforward on the main forest track, but expect soft, shifting sand on Łącka Dune and the beach. The dune climb is short but steep underfoot. In summer the route is busy and the open sand can be hot, bright and exposed; in spring and autumn it is quieter but windier. Carry water, sun protection and a wind layer. There are no overnight stops on the walk.
