The Lovrenc Lakes Trail is a short waymarked day hike on the Pohorje plateau in north-east Slovenia, usually walked as an approx. 11 km out-and-back from Rogla. It reaches Lovrenc Lakes (Lovrenška jezera), Slovenia’s largest high-altitude raised peat bog, on forest paths and wooden boardwalks. Allow roughly 2.5–4 hours return from Rogla. The walk is easy from Rogla and suitable for families, though the alternative approach from Lovrenc na Pohorju is much harder because of the long climb.

Route Overview

The common route starts and finishes at Rogla recreation centre, around 1,486 m, and follows signed forest paths across the Pohorje plateau towards the Lovrenc Lakes. Near the bog, wooden boardwalks protect the peat and form a short circuit around the pools, with a viewing tower at the edge of the lakes. Koca na Pesku mountain lodge sits on the plateau near the route. A steeper alternative starts in Lovrenc na Pohorju in the Drava valley and climbs to the lakes, but the family-friendly Rogla out-and-back is the standard choice. Natural History and the Jezernik Legend

Lovrenc Lakes are a natural part of the Pohorje raised-bog landscape, formed after the last Ice Age in shallow depressions fed only by rainwater. The pools have no surface inflow or outflow, which helped give rise to the local legend of Jezernik, a water spirit said to guard the lakes and punish disturbance with storms. Today the bog is a strictly protected nature reserve within Slovenia’s largest forest reserve. The nearby Osankarica and Three Nails area has separate WWII partisan history.

Lovrenc Lakes peat bog (Slovenia’s largest high-altitude raised bog): A cluster of dark, rain-fed pools on the Pohorje plateau. The number of visible pools varies roughly from 11 to 22 depending on rainfall.
Wooden boardwalks and viewing tower (bog protection and views): Boardwalks keep hikers off the fragile peat and lead to a wooden tower with an overhead view across the dwarf-pine-covered bog.
Rare bog flora and wildlife (protected reserve): Look for round-leaved sundew, bog rosemary and rusty-leaved alpenrose. The wider forest also shelters rare dragonflies and the endangered capercaillie.
Legend of Jezernik (Pohorje folklore): Local tradition says the water spirit Jezernik lives in the lakes, explaining why the pools never dry out despite having no visible inflow.
Rogla family access (easy plateau approach): From Rogla the trail is short, gentle and well marked, making it one of Pohorje’s most accessible family day walks.

Challenges to expect

From Rogla, the main challenges are wet ground, slippery wooden boardwalks after rain, and busy summer periods, especially in July and August. Stay on the boardwalks to protect the peat bog. Navigation is straightforward on the signed family route, but the Lovrenc na Pohorju approach is a different proposition: it climbs about 1,050 m from the valley and is much more demanding.
