The Shirakawa-go Winter Trek is a short, easy 2.3 km loop around Ogimachi village in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan. It is a 1-day walk, not a backcountry trek: expect village lanes, compacted snow, gassho-zukuri farmhouses and a gentle climb to the Ogimachi Castle Ruins (Shiroyama) Observation Deck. It suits travellers who want a simple winter walk with strong cultural interest and classic views of snow-covered Shirakawa-go.

Route Overview

Start and finish in Ogimachi village, commonly near the bus terminal or Deai Bridge over the Sho River. The usual loop wanders the village lanes past gassho-zukuri houses, Wada House and Myozenji Temple, then climbs briefly to the Ogimachi Castle Ruins (Shiroyama) Observation Deck at the north end of the village. Descend by path or road, or use the shuttle if the walking trail is closed after heavy snow. Across the river, the Gassho-zukuri Minka-en open-air museum can be added if you want a longer visit. For a tougher mountain objective in Japan, compare it with the Kamikochi to Mount Yari Trail; for another cultural walking route, see the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route.

Shirakawa-go’s gassho-zukuri heritage

Shirakawa-go developed in a remote mountain valley along the Sho River, with a self-sufficient way of life shaped by mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing. The steep thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses were designed to shed heavy snow and to provide upper-storey work space for silk production. Ogimachi preserves the largest concentration of these houses and was inscribed by UNESCO in 1995 with Ainokura and Suganuma as the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama.

Notable highlights

  • Gassho-zukuri farmhouses: Steep thatched roofs give Ogimachi its distinctive winter silhouette. The design helps shed heavy snow, and many houses are over 250 years old.
  • Ogimachi Castle Ruins (Shiroyama) Observation Deck: The walk’s high point, reached by a short climb or shuttle. It gives the classic panorama over the snow-covered village and surrounding mountains.
  • Wada House: The largest gassho-zukuri farmhouse in Ogimachi, now a museum. It shows how local households used the upper storeys beneath the huge roof.
  • Myozenji Temple: A village temple notable for its thatched roof rather than standard tiles, blending local farmhouse style with temple architecture.
  • Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up: On selected pre-booked evenings in January and February, the snow-covered farmhouses are illuminated. Reservations are essential and numbers are capped.
  • Deai Bridge and the Sho River: The suspension footbridge gives a clear arrival point into Ogimachi and frames the village against its snowy mountain setting.

Challenges to expect

The route is easy, with only about 45 m of ascent, but winter conditions matter. Village lanes and paths can be snow-packed or icy, so wear footwear with good grip. After heavy snowfall, the walking trail to the Shiroyama Observation Deck may close; use the shuttle if operating. This is a short village circuit, not a wilderness route, but allow time for queues, photos and museum visits.
