The Zwanenwater Nature Trail is an easy 2.5 km waymarked yellow loop in Het Zwanenwater, a protected coastal dune reserve just south of Callantsoog in North Holland, Netherlands. It takes about 1 hour, follows flat sandy, grassy and boardwalk paths, and suits walkers wanting a short nature-focused day walk. The yellow route is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs with assistance. Expect dune lakes, wetlands, bird hides, orchids in early summer and purple heath in August.

Route Overview

Start and finish at the Zwanenwater entrance and car park at Zuidschinkeldijk 3a, 1759 JH Callantsoog. The yellow route is a circular, waymarked loop through dunes, dune-slack wetlands, marsh, woodland and open water, skirting the Eerste Water with views across the lake. There are no stages or resupply needs: this is a short reserve walk rather than a trekking route. Entry is via the Natuurmonumenten entrance machine, with card/PIN payment. For a longer coastal walking context in the same country, compare it with the Dutch Coastal Path (Hollands Kustpad); for another wetland-focused Dutch hike, see the Biesbosch National Park Trail.

History of Het Zwanenwater

The dune lakes formed during the 18th century, when groundwater and rainwater collected behind the Zijperzeedijk, the sea dyke completed in 1597. The name Zwanenwater means “Swan Water” and refers to the area’s former connection with swans. Natuurmonumenten acquired the reserve in 1972 and has managed it for nature conservation since then. In 2007–2009 the lakes were dredged and cleaned to improve water quality.

Notable highlights

  • Eerste Water and Tweede Water: These are the reserve’s two dune lakes, counted among the largest natural freshwater dune lakes in Western Europe. The yellow walk skirts the Eerste Water, giving open views across reed-fringed water.
  • Spoonbill heritage: Zwanenwater was one of the Netherlands’ most important Eurasian spoonbill breeding sites through much of the 19th and 20th centuries, with a recorded peak of around 283 nests on Bokkeneiland in 1943. It remains a strong birding area.
  • Bird hides and migration: More than 75 bird species breed here each year, and the reserve lies on a major migration route. Three bird hides and viewing screens overlook the wetlands.
  • Orchids: Up to ten orchid species flower from May to July, especially in the damp dune slacks. This is one of the best seasonal reasons to time a visit for early summer.
  • Heathland in bloom: In August the dune heaths turn purple as the heather flowers. It is the reserve’s other signature seasonal display.
  • Dune-and-wetland mosaic: In a compact area, the route passes dunes, marsh, scrub, woodland and open water. The reserve also supports foxes, rabbits, sand lizards and butterflies.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy, flat walk with negligible climbing, but conditions can still affect footwear and access. Sandy and grassy paths may be wet, and parts of the route can stand under water in winter and early spring; waterproof footwear is advised from roughly November to April. Navigation is simple on the yellow waymarks, but stay on the trail: dogs, cycling, jogging and off-trail walking are not allowed. For a hillier Dutch nature option, compare the De Meinweg National Park Trail.
