The Bolafjall Viewpoint Trail is a very short out-and-back summit walk on Bolafjall, a 638 m flat-topped mountain above Bolungarvik in Iceland’s Westfjords. The listed walking distance is about 2 km return, but the key viewpoint — the Bolafjall Skywalk — is only a few minutes from the summit car park. This is an easy drive-up viewpoint walk, not a long-distance hike. It suits road-trippers, photographers and hikers wanting a quick exposed clifftop stop in Iceland.

Route Overview

Start and finish at the summit car park beside the radar station on top of Bolafjall, reached from Bolungarvik via Route 630 and the steep gravel mountain access road. From the car park, walk across the flat, rocky summit plateau to the Bolafjall Skywalk, then return the same way. The road is the main logistical challenge: it is normally open only from mid-June to mid-September, weather permitting. Bolungarvik is close to Isafjordur, making this a short Westfjords detour rather than a full hike. Bolafjall: Seafarers’ Landmark, Radar Site and Modern Skywalk

Bolafjall was long a landmark for seafarers entering Isafjardardjup. In the late 20th century, its summit became part of Iceland’s air-defence infrastructure: a NATO/Iceland Air Defence System radar station opened there in January 1992 and is now operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard. The access road was built in 1986 and opened to civilian traffic in 2002. The Bolafjall Skywalk opened in 2022 to give visitors a safer way to experience the cliff-edge view.

Notable highlights

Bolafjall Skywalk: A steel viewing platform opened in 2022 that cantilevers over the cliff edge. It gives a direct, exposed view down from the summit area and out to sea.
Isafjardardjup and Jokulfirdir panorama: The summit looks across Isafjardardjup bay, the Jokulfirdir fjords and towards Hornstrandir nature reserve. On exceptionally clear days, visitors claim views can reach Greenland.
Radar station: The radar buildings beside the car park are part of the Iceland Air Defence System. They make the summit feel less wild, but they are central to Bolafjall’s modern history.
Steep gravel access road: The mountain road from Bolungarvik is narrow, steep and exposed, with few barriers. For many visitors, the drive is the most demanding part of the outing.
Midnight sun viewpoint: The high, open, west-and-north-facing clifftop is a known place to watch the midnight sun in high summer.

Challenges to expect

The short walk is easy, flat and rocky, but the setting is exposed: wind, low cloud and sudden weather can make the cliff-edge plateau feel serious. There are no food or water services on the mountain and facilities are limited. The access road is seasonal, steep gravel and weather-dependent; outside its normal summer opening, reaching the top requires a longer walk-up route rather than the brief viewpoint stroll.
