The Risnjak Summit Trail is a hard 16 km out-and-back day hike in Croatia, climbing from the Crni Lug park entrance to Veliki Risnjak, the 1,528 m high point of Risnjak National Park. Expect roughly 838 m of ascent, forest paths, rocky ground and a steep exposed limestone finish. It suits fit hikers with mountain experience who want a serious Gorski Kotar summit day, not a casual woodland walk.

Route Overview

Start at the Crni Lug park entrance and visitor centre, about 1 km west of Crni Lug village, and follow Horvatova staza — Horvat’s Trail — towards Veliki Risnjak. The route climbs through beech and fir forest, then subalpine beech and mountain pine, before the final rocky limestone push to the summit. Schlosserov dom sits on the saddle just below the top, but hut services are not guaranteed. The walk returns the same way to Crni Lug. If you want a gentler Croatian forest walk, compare Jankovac Forest Trail; for a longer mountain objective, see the Ivanščica Mountain Trail.

Risnjak National Park and Croatian mountaineering

Risnjak’s forests were recommended for protection by botanist Ivo Horvat, and the area became a national park in 1953, with earlier protection noted from 1949 and later enlargement in 1997. The Schlosserov dom lodge below the summit recalls Dr Josip Schlosser Klekovski, an important figure in the early Croatian mountaineering movement and Croatian botany. The massif’s name is linked to the Eurasian lynx, which was hunted out and later reintroduced to the wider region in the 1970s.

Notable highlights

  • Veliki Risnjak summit (1,528 m): The highest point in Risnjak National Park and the second-highest summit in Gorski Kotar. In clear weather, hikers can see across the Gorski Kotar mountains towards Snježnik, Guslica, the Kvarner coast and the Julian Alps.
  • Schlosserov dom mountain lodge: A historic mountain hut on the saddle just below the summit, traditionally used as the staging point for the final climb. It has been reported closed, so do not rely on food, drink or overnight access without checking ahead.
  • Leska Educational Trail: A 4.4–4.5 km circular interpretive path near the Crni Lug entrance. It passes forest zones and karst features such as sinkholes and rock formations, making it a useful warm-up or lower-level alternative.
  • Lynx and big-mammal habitat: Risnjak takes its name from the Croatian word for lynx, “ris”. The park is habitat for brown bear, wolf, reintroduced lynx, red and roe deer and capercaillie, though seeing lynx is extremely unlikely.
  • Karst forest landscape: The route crosses limestone and dolomite terrain, with sinkholes, caves and well-preserved beech-fir forest. The park also contains the spring source of the Kupa river at its lowest point.
  • Via Dinarica White Trail connection: Veliki Risnjak is one of the 72 summits on the long-distance Via Dinarica White Trail through the Dinaric Alps. For a very different Croatian long trail, compare the Adriatic Long-Distance Trail.

Challenges to expect

This is a strenuous single-day ascent with 838 m of climbing and a demanding T3-style mountain character. Lower sections are forest tracks and dirt paths with roots; higher up the route becomes rocky, uneven and exposed on limestone. Weather can change quickly, and winter snow makes the massif suitable only for experienced mountaineers with proper equipment. Check park fees and do not assume Schlosserov dom is open.
