The Moravian Karst is a day-hiking area north of Brno in South Moravia, Czechia, not a single 42 km point-to-point trail. Plan on a moderate 16 km full-day loop through the core, or the classic ~9 km Skalní Mlýn–Punkva Caves–Macocha Abyss walk. The terrain is wooded limestone valleys, gorges, sinkholes and cave entrances on marked paths. It suits walkers who want karst scenery, show caves and flexible routes rather than a continuous multi-day trek.

Route Overview

The main base is Skalní Mlýn, reached by bus from Blansko, which has rail links from Brno. A classic circular walk starts at Skalní Mlýn, follows the Punkva valley on the blue trail past the Punkva Caves, climbs to the Macocha Abyss observation bridges, then returns through forest and karst valleys. Expect about 9 km with ~280 m ascent for the signature route, or 14–16 km for longer loops linking the core sights. A road train runs from Skalní Mlýn towards the Punkva Caves and lower cable-car station, and the cable car links the caves with the upper Macocha bridge outside winter. Exploration of the Moravian Karst

The limestone of the Moravian Karst has attracted cave explorers for more than a century. Between 1909 and 1933, a team led by Czech speleologist Prof. Karel Absolon opened up the Punkva Caves, including the underground river route to the foot of the Macocha Abyss. The wider area was declared a Protected Landscape Area in 1956. Some caves, including Býčí skála, are also important archaeological sites, with finds linked to the Iron Age.

Notable highlights

Macocha Abyss (138.5 m deep): This collapsed-roof sinkhole is the headline viewpoint of the Moravian Karst. Upper and lower observation bridges look down towards the lakes where the Punkva river surfaces.
Punkva Caves and underground boat trip: The best-known cave tour combines dripstone galleries, the floor of the Macocha Abyss and a ~20-minute boat ride on the subterranean Punkva river. Book ahead in summer.
Sloup-Šošůvka Caves: The largest cave system open to the public in Czechia, with the ~80 m-deep Nagel Chasm viewed from platform bridges.
Kateřinská Cave: Known for the country’s largest publicly accessible cave dome and the “Bamboo Forest” of slender stalagmites.
Pustý žleb and Suchý žleb: Dry wooded limestone valleys linking key caves and viewpoints, with rock outcrops, sinkholes and the Koňský spád viewpoint.

Challenges to expect

Navigation is straightforward on colour-waymarked Czech tourist trails, but this is a network, so choose your loop before setting out. The Punkva valley is mostly easy, with asphalt and gravel, while the climb to the Macocha bridges has steeper forest and rocky stepped sections. Caves are cool year-round. The Punkva boat trip may be shortened or cancelled after high water, and the cable car does not run in winter.
