The Postojna Caves Circular Trail is the marked Sovič Recreational Trail in Postojna, south-west Slovenia: an easy 3 km loop for walkers or cyclists beside, not inside, Postojna Cave. Allow about 1–1.5 hours, or longer if you detour to the Sovič summit viewpoint and castle ruins. With gentle karst terrain, a modest 120 m climb, meadows, woodland and a River Pivka crossing, it suits families, cave visitors and anyone wanting a short day walk from town.

Route Overview

Start and finish in front of TIC Galerija in Postojna. The circular route heads via Čukovica, passes behind Sovič hill, crosses the rolling Poljane and reaches Veliki Otok after about 2 km, with a viewpoint above the village and St Catherine’s Church. It then descends to Veliki Otok, follows the main road towards the Postojna Cave area, crosses the River Pivka by bridge, and returns along an avenue of linden trees beside the regional road to TIC Galerija. For other short cultural routes in Slovenia, compare the Idrija Mercury Trail or the Žiče Charterhouse Trail; for a much bigger Slovenian mountain objective, see the Bohinj to Triglav Trail.

Sovič Hill and Old Postojna

Sovič hill above Postojna has a long defensive history, including an Iron Age hillfort and a later Roman fortification. In the Middle Ages, the first Postojna castle, Grad Adelsberg or the Old Castle, stood on the summit and was first documented in 1228; today only ruins remain. The hill also has the small Chapel of St Ursula, old defensive trenches and a 20th-century military bunker. At its foot lies Majlont, the oldest quarter of Postojna.

Notable highlights

  • Sovič hill (677 m) and the Adelsberg castle ruins: The town hill the loop wraps around, with a short detour to summit ruins, old trenches and views over Postojna.
  • Veliki Otok viewpoint and St Catherine’s Church: About 2 km in, this is the scenic high point of the walk, looking across the broad Pivka basin and surrounding karst plateaus.
  • River Pivka and its bridge: The route crosses the Pivka on the return towards the cave area; this is the same river system associated with Postojna Cave underground.
  • Postojna Cave entrance and Jamski Dvorec mansion: The walk starts near one of the world’s best-known show cave entrances and the 19th-century Cave Mansion, making the cave an easy paid add-on.
  • Avenue of linden trees: The final section follows a linden-lined roadside back to TIC Galerija, giving a shaded finish through Postojna’s cultivated karst landscape.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy town-based loop, but expect a modest climb of about 120 m and mixed surfaces: compacted macadam and dirt through wooded sections, then road and paved walking near Veliki Otok and the Pivka bridge. Take care on roadside sections. In winter, snow or ice can affect the hill paths. The route is outside Postojna Cave; cave entry is separate and paid.
