The Porkkalanniemi Coastal Path is a short network of waymarked coastal trails on the Porkkalanniemi peninsula in Kirkkonummi, Uusimaa, southern Finland. A typical visit is about 4 km, takes half a day, and is easy, with pine forest, rocky Gulf of Finland shoreline and low granite viewpoints. It suits families, birdwatchers and hikers wanting a simple day trip from Helsinki rather than a long-distance walk. For another nearby option, compare the Helsinki Central Park Trail.
Route Overview
The marked trails radiate from the main Porkkalanniemi car park, so you can build a short loop rather than follow one fixed route. The main options are the Haahka accessible spur of about 120 m, Pampskatanin pisto at 1.4 km, Vetokannaksen taival at 2.1 km and the Teleberget Loop at 2.2 km. Many hikers combine two or more for a roughly 4 km outing. The route threads forest paths, boardwalk sections and exposed coastal granite before returning to the car park. Porkkalanniemi is about an hour by car from Helsinki and is also reachable by bus from Kirkkonummi railway station. For other Helsinki-region hiking, see Nuuksio National Park Trail or the coastal Ekenäs Archipelago Trail.
Porkkala’s Soviet Naval Base History
Porkkala has long been strategically important on the Gulf of Finland. Under the 1944 Moscow Armistice, the area around Porkkala was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base from 29 September 1944. Around 7,200 Finnish inhabitants were evacuated, and at its peak roughly 30,000 Soviet troops were based here. The Soviet Union returned the area to Finland on 26 January 1956, after which Porkkalanniemi gradually reopened to the public. Nearby Upinniemi remains a Finnish Navy base.
Notable highlights
- Telegrafberget / Teleberget viewpoint (about 35 m): The local high point is reached on the short Teleberget Loop. Its bare granite crown gives wide views over the Gulf of Finland.
- Pampskatan rocky shores (1.4 km spur): Pampskatanin pisto leads to the open southern tip of the peninsula. Smooth Baltic granite slabs meet the sea here, but they need care when wet.
- Arctic bird migration: The exposed cape is a major birdwatching point in spring and autumn. Look for Arctic geese, common eiders and long-tailed ducks passing or resting offshore.
- Pine forest and coastal nature: The trails cross old pine forest, ancient cliffs and barren-rock flora within a 156-hectare recreation and conservation area.
- Soviet-era traces: Porkkala was leased to the Soviet Union as a naval base from 1944 to 1956. The wider area still carries reminders of that period.
- Cooking shelters and campfire sites: Maintained fire pits and shelters, including the Lokki canopy, make the loops practical for a picnic or barbecue stop.
Challenges to expect
This is an easy walk, but not entirely smooth. Expect roots, packed-dirt forest paths, short boardwalks and sloping granite on the shore. The rock can be slippery when wet, and only the Haahka spur is barrier-free. Navigation is simple on the waymarked trails, but distances vary depending on which loops and spurs you combine. The trails are maintained from spring to autumn, not in winter.
