The Pilatus Flower Trail is a short secured alpine nature trail on Mount Pilatus above Lucerne in central Switzerland. The out-and-back walk is about 2 km return from Pilatus Kulm to the Tomlishorn, the highest point of Pilatus at 2,128 m. It is a one-day or half-day outing, graded moderate: the path is made and protected, but includes steps, rocky sections, switchbacks and airy drop-offs. It suits hikers with sturdy shoes, sure-footedness and a head for heights.

Route Overview

Start at Pilatus Kulm, the top station by Hotel Pilatus-Kulm and Hotel Bellevue, at about 2,038 m. From there the Blumenpfad follows the south flank of the summit ridge towards the Tomlishorn, passing plaques that identify the alpine plants growing on the slopes. The route climbs modestly, with about 94 m of ascent on the outward leg, before a rockier final section to the summit. Return the same way: this is not a loop. Pilatus Kulm is reached by the Alpnachstad cogwheel railway or the Kriens cableway and panorama gondolas; there is no road access. History and conservation on Mount Pilatus

The Flower Trail is a modern visitor and conservation project rather than a historic long-distance route. It was created by the Pro Pilatus association and is run with Pilatus-Bahnen AG to showcase and protect the mountain’s alpine flora. Mount Pilatus itself has long been tied to legends of Pontius Pilate and dragons. Mass tourism reached the summit with the Pilatus Railway, opened in 1889, which still carries visitors up to Pilatus Kulm.

Notable highlights

Tomlishorn (2,128 m): The highest point of Mount Pilatus and the trail’s turnaround point. The final stretch is rockier, with broad views towards Lake Lucerne and the central Swiss Alps in clear weather.
Over 100 alpine flower species: The path is designed around its flora, including edelweiss, alpine gentian, alpine poppy, mountain avens, fairy foxglove and bellflowers. Small plaques give names, colours and flowering times.
Cliff-cut panoramic path: The route is carved into the south side of the summit ridge and secured on the outer edge. It feels airy without being a technical climbing route.
Ibex on the rock faces: Alpine ibex are often seen on the crags beside the trail, especially early or late in the day.

Challenges to expect

The distance is short, but do not treat it as a paved promenade. Expect steps, switchbacks, rocky sections and exposed drop-offs protected by barriers. Sure-footedness and sturdy shoes are advised, and the trail is not suitable for wheelchairs or buggies. It is usually open from mid-June to October after snow clearance; check Pilatus-Bahnen status, as closures for rock-stabilisation works have occurred.
