The Cherven Eco-Trail is a short 3.5 km moderate loop at the Medieval Town of Cherven in Rusenski Lom Nature Park, north-eastern Bulgaria. It suits hikers planning a half-day walk rather than a long-distance trek: expect stone steps, rocky grass paths, fortress ruins and repeated views over the Cherni Lom meanders. The route starts below Cherven village, climbs to the fortress plateau, then follows the ridge around the river bend before returning close to the start.

Route Overview

Start and finish at the car park and ticket office below Cherven fortress, about 30 km south of Ruse. The waymarked route climbs the panoramic stone stairway to the eastern gate, crosses the long fortress plateau and continues along the rocky ridge above a tight Cherni Lom meander. Key points include the inner city, citadel, boyar’s castle, three-storey battle tower, church remains and viewpoints into the canyon. The core ridge walk is around 3 km, with the listed 3.5 km allowing for the approach and wandering on the plateau. A separate longer option adds the river-bottom path to the rock monasteries. History of Cherven Fortress

Cherven began as a Byzantine fortress in the 6th century and became a major military, administrative, craft and trade centre during the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. After 1235 it was the seat of the Cherven Metropolia, while rock monasteries developed in the surrounding canyon. The Ottomans took the town in 1388 and it later declined as residents resettled below the plateau. Excavations began in 1961, and the site has been a national archaeological reserve since 1965.

Notable highlights

Cherven Fortress plateau: The ruined medieval town crowns a long rock plateau above the Cherni Lom. The walk gives close access to the citadel, boyar’s castle, church remains and underground water-supply passages.
Three-storey battle tower: Cherven’s best-known survivor is the only preserved medieval battle tower of its kind in Bulgaria, and it served as the model for the reconstructed Baldwin Tower at Tsarevets in Veliko Tarnovo. It is a clear landmark on the plateau.
Cherni Lom canyon meanders: The ridge follows the river’s tight bends from above, with repeated viewpoints down into the limestone gorge and riverside forest.
Rusenski Lom rock monasteries: An optional descent reaches cave churches in the cliffs, including Moskov Dol, Golyam Rai, Malak Rai and Koshuta. These are part of the medieval rock-monastery landscape along the river.
Rusenski Lom Nature Park birdlife: The canyon cliffs are habitat for raptors, and the park records around 190 bird species including Egyptian vulture, golden eagle and long-legged buzzard.
Ivanovo rock-hewn churches nearby: This UNESCO World Heritage Site of cliff churches with medieval frescoes is part of the same wider eco-trail network and is an easy add-on by car.

Challenges to expect

The main effort is the stone stairway from the car park to the fortress plateau, followed by uneven rocky and grassy ground on the ridge. There are no technical or exposed sections, but the open plateau can be hot in summer, so carry water and sun cover. Waymarking exists within the Rusenski Lom network, including red marking on the regional pedestrian route, but optional riverside detours need more attention.
