The Bucura Lake Circuit is a 7.5 km moderate day loop in the Retezat Mountains of Hunedoara County, southern Carpathians, Romania. It explores the glacial-lake cirque around Bucura Lake in Retezat National Park, usually taking 4–6 hours for the listed loop. It suits hikers who want a compact alpine route with lakes, moraine and rocky saddles, without committing to a long traverse. Expect easy lakeshore walking lower down, rougher rocky ground higher up and extra effort from the altitude above 2,000 m.

Route Overview

Most hikers base the circuit at Bucura Lake, around 2,040 m. Vehicle access is via the Poiana Pelegii trailhead, reached by a roughly 20 km forest road from the Gura Apelor dam; from Poiana Pelegii the blue-band trail climbs to the lake before you start the loop. The circuit links Bucura Lake with nearby glacial lakes including Lia, Ana, Viorica, Florica, Tăul Porții and Bucurel, with higher sections around saddles such as Curmătura Bucurei. Glacial and protected-park history

The cirques and moraine ridges around Bucura were shaped by Pleistocene-era glaciers, which left the stepped basins now occupied by the Retezat’s glacial lakes. The wider area became Romania’s first national park in 1935 and was later recognised as the country’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1979. Bucura has also long been associated with shepherds, walkers and traditional “nedeia” mountain folk gatherings, with the lake’s name linked to the Romanian word “bucurie”, meaning joy.

Notable highlights

Bucura Lake (about 2,040 m): Romania’s largest glacial lake, set below Peleaga Peak, is the natural base for the circuit and the main camping area in this part of the massif.
Glacial lake chain — Lia, Ana, Viorica, Florica and Bucurel: The loop threads a sequence of cirque lakes in a classic Carpathian alpine landscape of grass, stone and water.
Retezat National Park: Romania’s first national park and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, with high peaks, protected habitats and strict rules in sensitive zones such as the Gemenele Scientific Reserve.
Peleaga Peak detour: The park’s highest summit, 2,509 m, rises above Bucura and can be added by a yellow-cross side trail of about 2.5 km with roughly 470 m of ascent.
Curmătura Bucurei and higher saddles: These sections give the route its more alpine feel, with rougher ground, wider views and more exposure than the easy lakeshore paths.

Challenges to expect

The loop is moderate, not technical in its standard form, but the terrain changes quickly: grassy lakeshore paths give way to rocky moraine, boulders, loose stone and possible snow patches higher up. Mud is common after rain. Weather can shift fast in the Retezat, and altitude above 2,000 m adds effort. There is no mountain hut at Bucura Lake; camping is only in designated areas.
