The Antwerp Harbour Trail is best treated as a self-guided urban harbour walk in Antwerp, Belgium, not an official waymarked long-distance route. The indicative 12.5 km loop explores the Eilandje district and old Right Bank docks, linking MAS, Kattendijkdok, Kattendijksluis, harbour cranes, the Red Star Line Museum and the Scheldt quays. It is an easy, flat day walk on mostly paved waterfront streets and paths, suited to families, city hikers and anyone wanting maritime history without committing to a rural trail.

Route Overview

Most walkers start and finish near the Museum aan de Stroom (MAS) in the Eilandje, making a flat loop around Antwerp’s historic docklands. A logical circuit links the old docks and Kattendijkdok, crosses towards Kattendijksluis, continues to the Havenhuis, then returns past preserved harbour cranes, the Red Star Line Museum and the Scheldt riverside. No point-to-point transfer is needed; this is an urban circuit with normal city access and plenty of options to shorten it. For other Belgian city or waterside walks, compare the Ghent City Trail, Bruges Historic Loop or Bruges to Damme Canal Trail.

Antwerp’s Docklands and the Eilandje

Antwerp developed as a major trading port on the Scheldt from the late Middle Ages and became a leading commercial centre in the 16th century. Later conflict and the closure of the Scheldt reduced its role, before 19th- and 20th-century industrialisation drove harbour expansion. The Eilandje, Antwerp’s oldest dock district, was redeveloped from the 2000s into a residential and cultural quarter, anchored by MAS, the Red Star Line Museum and the Port House.

Notable highlights

  • Havenhuis / Port House: The headquarters of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, combining a converted former fire station with a faceted glass extension by Zaha Hadid Architects. It is one of the most recognisable modern landmarks on the Eilandje.
  • Museum aan de Stroom (MAS): Antwerp’s maritime and city-history museum, standing beside the old docks. Its free rooftop is a useful viewpoint over the river, docks and city grid.
  • Kattendijksluis and Kattendijkdok: Kattendijk Lock is the oldest surviving lock in Antwerp and sits beside Kattendijkdok. It is a good place to understand how the historic docks connect with the wider port landscape.
  • Historic harbour cranes: A preserved line of dockside cranes along the old quays recalls the labour and machinery of Antwerp’s cargo-handling past. They add strong industrial character to an otherwise easy urban walk.
  • Red Star Line Museum: Housed in former shipping-company sheds, this museum tells the story of European emigrants who left Antwerp for America. It is one of the most meaningful cultural stops on the route.
  • Scheldt riverside: Open quays give wide views across the Scheldt and towards the scale of Antwerp’s working port. Expect exposure to wind and rain here in poor weather.

Challenges to expect

The main challenge is navigation rather than terrain: there is no single verified, branded waymarked Antwerp Harbour Trail, so use a map and treat the 12.5 km distance as indicative. Surfaces are mostly paved with some gravel, and the route is effectively flat. Expect urban road crossings, exposed quaysides, wind and rain near open water, and some industrial-feeling sections where you must stay on public routes.
