Trigrad Gorge to Devil’s Throat Cave is a short, moderate walk in the Western Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, near Trigrad in Smolyan Province. The listed route is about 3.5 km, taking a few hours rather than a full trekking day. The gorge approach is easy on a paved road, but the cave adds wet surfaces and a steep exit climb of 301 steps. It suits hikers who want a compact Rhodope outing with limestone scenery, a show cave and minimal logistics.

Route Overview

Start in Trigrad village or at the car park in the gorge near Devil’s Throat Cave. The route follows the small paved road along the Trigrad River through the lower Trigrad Gorge to the cave entrance. Visitors enter the cave by a 150 m artificial tunnel, follow the guided tourist route to the Hall of Thunder and waterfall, then exit by climbing the 301 natural steps back to the gorge. Treat it as a short out-and-back or point-to-point gorge walk with a guided cave circuit. For nearby Bulgarian walking ideas, compare the Rhodope village route on the Eco Trail to Shiroka Laka or another short heritage walk on the Cherven Eco-Trail.

History and legends of Devil’s Throat Cave

The Trigrad River carved the gorge and cave system over millennia, and the cave’s natural entrance was long linked with local fear and the Orpheus and Eurydice legend. To open it to visitors, a 150 m artificial gallery was driven into the rock so people could reach the Hall of Thunder. In 1970, Bulgarian cave divers Siyana Lyutskanova and Evstati Yovchev attempted to explore the underwater siphon beneath the waterfall; they never resurfaced, and neither bodies nor equipment were recovered.

Notable highlights

  • Devil’s Throat Cave (Dyavolsko Garlo): A karst show cave branching off Trigrad Gorge. Its gaping entrance is said to resemble a devil’s head, and entry is by guided tour only.
  • Highest underground waterfall on the Balkans: The Trigrad River drops 42 m inside the cave, creating the main drama of the visit.
  • Hall of Thunder: The waterfall crashes into this vast chamber, described in the brief as Bulgaria’s second-largest cave hall. The name comes from the roar of falling water.
  • The vanishing river: Around 400 m inside, the water disappears into a funnel more than 150 m deep. Dye tests show it takes over 1.5 hours to travel a short distance downstream.
  • The 301 steps: The exit climbs a steep natural stairway equivalent to about a 22-storey building, passing the spring known as the Tears of Orpheus.
  • Trigrad Gorge scenery: The wider gorge is a 6–7 km limestone canyon with sheer walls up to 300 m high, plus rare Rhodope flora, wallcreepers and large bat colonies.

Challenges to expect

The walking distance is short, but do not treat the cave as an easy stroll. The underground path is damp and can be slippery, and the 301 exit steps are steep and sustained. The gorge road is straightforward, but cave access depends on guided-tour opening hours and conditions. Heavy rain or snowmelt can raise water levels and close the cave. In peak months, especially July and August, expect more visitors.
