The Kokořínsko Rock Formations Trail is a 10.5 km moderate day loop in Kokořínský důl, within the Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area in Central Bohemia, Czechia. Starting below Kokořín Castle, it links a Romantic castle, shaded sandstone gorges, the Pokličky mushroom rocks, a rock labyrinth and the Nedamy rock castle ruin. Allow about 3.5–5 hours, more if touring the castle or lingering at the rock formations. It suits walkers who want a compact, waymarked Czech sandstone landscape without committing to a multi-day route.
Route Overview
The walk starts and finishes in the Kokořín valley below Kokořín Castle, where there are paid car parks and bus access from Mšeno. The loop uses standard Czech KČT colour-coded waymarks — blue, yellow, green and red — across a dense network of junctions. A typical circuit climbs to Kokořín Castle, passes through Kokořín village, enters the forested Kokořínský důl gorges, reaches the Pokličky rock formations, then continues via the rock labyrinth / Skalní bludiště, Nedamy rock castle and Harasov pond before returning along the valley. For other Czech sandstone walks, compare the Hrubá Skála Rock Town Circuit, the Golden Trail of the Czech Paradise and the Jetřichovice Lookout Trail.
Kokořínsko’s Romantic Castle and Sandstone Country
Kokořín Castle dates from the early 14th century, was damaged in the Hussite Wars and later stood derelict for centuries before its 1911–1916 Romantic reconstruction. The wider sandstone country became associated with 19th-century Romantic poets and painters, and the protected landscape area now carries the name Kokořínsko–Máchův kraj, honouring poet Karel Hynek Mácha. The protected landscape area was established in 1976 and renamed after the Máchův kraj extension was added in 2014.
Notable highlights
- Kokořín Castle: A Gothic castle on a sandstone spur above the valley, later rebuilt in neo-Gothic Romanticist style. It gives the protected landscape area its name and makes a strong start or finish to the loop.
- Pokličky rock formations: The trail’s signature sandstone “lids” are mushroom-shaped towers formed where a harder iron-cemented cap protects softer sandstone below. The largest is about 12 m tall with a lid around 6 m across.
- Sandstone gorges (rokle): Kokořínský důl is cut by cool, shaded gorges, overhangs and narrow passages. These sections are the most atmospheric part of the walk and can be slippery after rain.
- Rock labyrinth / Skalní bludiště: A maze of sandstone clefts and narrow passages on the plateau near the Pokličky, reached by wooden steps. It is a worthwhile short diversion from the marked loop.
- Nedamy rock castle: A medieval rock castle ruin hewn into the sandstone, with surviving chambers and rock-cut features. It adds a rougher historical stop away from the better-known castle.
- Harasov pond: A scenic valley fishpond used for swimming in summer. It sits on the lower return section through the Kokořínsko wetland landscape.
Challenges to expect
The route is moderate rather than technical. Expect steep sandstone steps, narrow gorge paths, wooden staircases and rocky or sandy sections that become muddy and slippery after rain. Winter snow or ice can make the steps treacherous. Navigation is usually reliable, but the dense mix of blue, yellow, green and red KČT waymarks around the Pokličky and rock maze makes a map or offline app useful. For a gentler long-distance contrast, see the Czech Greenways.
