The János Hill Trail is a short forest hike in the Buda Hills on the western edge of Budapest, Hungary. Most versions cover around 7.5 km, with shorter out-and-backs and longer waymarked loops both possible. Expect a half-day walk, easy to moderate difficulty, and a summit at 528 m on János-hegy, the highest point in Budapest. It suits families, first-time visitors and hikers wanting a quick city-to-woodland route; for another Budapest viewpoint walk, see the Gellért Hill Trail.
Route Overview
Most walkers start at Normafa, a popular Buda Hills recreation area with clearings, benches and viewpoints, then follow signed forest paths and gravel tracks towards János-hegy and the Elizabeth Lookout. The route is often walked as an out-and-back to the summit, but many waymarked options form loops, including longer routes via Szépjuhászné and the Pauline monastery site. Access is unusually easy: Normafa is close to the Cogwheel Railway terminus, Zugliget connects with the Libegő chairlift, and the Children’s Railway serves János-hegy station, about a 10-minute walk below the summit. For longer Hungarian hill walking, compare the Börzsöny Mountains Trail or the Bükk National Park Trail.
János-hegy and the Elizabeth Lookout
János-hegy has been a Budapest excursion destination since the late 19th century. Empress Elisabeth visited the hill in 1882, and the stone Elizabeth Lookout later replaced earlier wooden viewing structures. Designed by Frigyes Schulek, the tower was built from 1908 and opened in 1910. The Libegő chairlift and the children-run narrow-gauge railway later made the hill one of the best-known family day-out spots in the Buda Hills.
Notable highlights
Elizabeth Lookout (Erzsébet kilátó): A Neo-Romanesque stone tower on the 528 m summit, designed by Frigyes Schulek and opened in 1910. The roughly 100-step spiral staircase gives the walk its main payoff.
Summit panorama: In clear weather, views reach across Budapest and the surrounding region, with the Mátra Mountains and the Great Hungarian Plain visible on the horizon.
Libegő chairlift: This Zugliget chairlift offers a roughly 15-minute ride through the Buda Hills treetops, useful for shortening the climb or making an easy descent.
Children’s Railway (Gyermekvasút): A narrow-gauge railway through the Buda Hills, staffed largely by children under adult supervision. János-hegy station sits a short walk below the summit.
Normafa: The usual starting point for the walk, with open clearings, picnic benches and viewpoints before the forest climb to János-hegy.
Szépjuhászné and the Pauline monastery site: A waypoint on longer loops between János Hill and Hárshegy, linked with the medieval Pauline Order’s first friary.
Challenges to expect
This is not a high-mountain route, but the forest roads and paths are unpaved, sometimes rooty, uneven or slippery after rain. Navigation is generally straightforward thanks to Hungarian forest waymarks and popular mapping coverage, but the area has many intersecting tracks and loop options. Clear weather matters for the summit view, and optional chairlift or railway use may involve small charges.
