The Jankovac Forest Trail is the English name for Grofova poučna staza, the Count’s Educational Trail in Jankovac Forest Park, within Papuk Nature Park in north-eastern Croatia. It is a 2.3 km loop taking roughly 0.5–1.5 hours, best treated as an easy, family-friendly day walk with a few steeper stairways near Skakavac waterfall. It suits hikers who want a short Slavonian forest walk with lakes, old beech woodland, interpretation boards and a lodge at the trailhead.

Route Overview

The loop starts and ends at the Jankovac excursion site and planinarski dom Jankovac, at about 475 m on the northern slopes of the Papuk massif. No fixed walking direction is specified in the verified brief: the circular interpretive path links the mountain lodge, the upper and lower Jankovac lakes, Count Janković’s tomb in a cave above the lake, old beech forest, meadows, viewpoints and Skakavac waterfall. The route uses natural forest paths plus built wooden steps, footbridges and handrails on steeper sections. No public transport details are verified here. For a broader Slavonia and Croatia itinerary, compare it with the wetland walking at Kopački Rit or the waterfall scenery on the Krka Waterfalls Trail.

Count Janković and the Making of Jankovac

Jankovac is named after Count Josip pl. Janković, a 19th-century nobleman from nearby Vočin who recognised the valley’s landscape value. Around 1860 he left the Viennese court to develop Jankovac as a forest park and mountain resort, creating the two lakes, shaping the waterfalls and laying out the grounds. He built his tomb in a cave above the lake and is buried there. Jankovac was protected as a forest park in 1955, and the Count’s Educational Trail is named in his honour.

Notable highlights

  • Skakavac waterfall (about 30 m): Slavonia’s tallest waterfall is the scenic climax of the walk. This tufa cascade is fed by the outflow from the Jankovac lakes, strongest in spring and capable of freezing into an ice column in hard winters.
  • The two Jankovac lakes: Gornje and Donje jezero are artificial lakes created in the 19th century by Count Janković as trout-breeding ponds. The lower lake is open to canoeing.
  • Count Janković’s tomb: The count who shaped the park chose to be buried in a cave above the lake. It gives the short loop a strong cultural and historical focus as well as natural scenery.
  • Old beech forest of Papuk: The trail passes through mature beech woodland typical of the higher Slavonian highlands. Papuk Nature Park is roughly 95% forested.
  • Planinarski dom Jankovac: The mountain lodge at the trailhead offers food and accommodation, making the loop simple to combine with lunch or an overnight stay.
  • Papuk UNESCO Global Geopark: Jankovac sits at the heart of Croatia’s first UNESCO Global Geopark, with interpretation boards explaining the area’s geological, natural and cultural features.

Challenges to expect

This is a short route, but not a flat park stroll. Expect dirt forest paths, wooden footbridges, stairways, handrails and some steeper descents around Skakavac waterfall. Timber structures and steps can be slippery after rain or in winter, when the waterfall may freeze. Navigation is eased by the waymarked interpretive loop, but Papuk Nature Park charges a small entrance fee. For a more demanding Croatian mountain objective, see the Ivanščica Mountain Trail.
