The Hrubá Skála Rock Town Circuit is a 7.5 km waymarked day-hike loop in Hruboskalsko, between Hrubá Skála chateau and Valdštejn Castle in northern Czechia. Expect a moderate walk taking about 2.5–4 hours through forest, cliffs and Cretaceous sandstone towers in the Český ráj Protected Landscape Area. It suits hikers who want a short but hands-on rock-town route: the distance is easy, but the interior passages include steps, roots, narrow clefts and short steep sections.
Route Overview
Start and finish at Hrubá Skála chateau in the village of Hrubá Skála, about 6 km south-east of Turnov. The recommended anticlockwise loop heads out on the yellow/interior path through Mariánská vyhlídka, Myší díra, Adamovo lože, Antonínův pramen, Janova vyhlídka and Vyhlídka na Kapelu to Valdštejn Castle, then returns along the red-waymarked Golden Trail of the Bohemian Paradise. Because it is a loop, no onward transport is needed; parking near Hrubá Skála and Valdštejn is paid in season. For a wider Czech sandstone trip, compare it with the Kokořínsko Rock Formations Trail and the Jetřichovice Lookout Trail.
Castles, Romantic scenery and Czech climbing history
Valdštejn Castle was founded around 1260–1270 by the Markvartic family, ancestors of the Wallensteins/Valdštejns, and is the oldest castle in Český ráj. Nearby Skála, now Hrubá Skála chateau, is recorded from 1353. The rock town later attracted Romantic-era painters and writers, while the sandstone towers became one of the cradles of Czech rock climbing. Český ráj was declared the Czech Republic’s first protected landscape area in 1955 and is now a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Notable highlights
- Mariánská vyhlídka (Marian Viewpoint): A railed rock terrace with the circuit’s signature panorama over sandstone towers towards the silhouette of Trosky Castle.
- Valdštejn Castle: The oldest castle in the Bohemian Paradise, set on three sandstone rocks linked by bridges, with a Baroque pilgrimage chapel and statues at the entrance.
- Hrubá Skála chateau: A former Gothic castle later rebuilt in Renaissance and neo-Gothic styles; it now operates as a hotel and spa with an accessible tower viewpoint.
- Sandstone towers of Hruboskalsko: Around 400 pillars, some up to 60 m tall, with rock windows, caves and honeycombed faces; this is a classic Czech sandstone-climbing area.
- Myší díra and interior rock passages: Narrow clefts, ravines and stairways make the inside route feel like a compact stone labyrinth rather than a simple forest stroll.
- Golden Trail of the Bohemian Paradise: The red waymarked route crosses the Hruboskalsko plateau, linking the chateau, viewpoints and castle.
Challenges to expect
The route is short, but the interior rock-town path is more demanding than the plateau trail. Expect hundreds of stone or timber steps, roots, rocky tread, narrow passages and short steep ups and downs. It is family- and dog-friendly, but not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Summer is busy; late spring and autumn are quieter. In winter, steps and rock passages can be icy or slippery.
