The Groene Hart Pad (SP 12) is a 202 km circular streekpad through the Green Heart of the Netherlands, starting and finishing in Woerden. Plan on 11 days if walking the official daily stages; the flat, well-signed terrain makes it Easy, though the long polder days still need steady stamina. It suits hikers who want villages, windmills, peat meadows, lakes and good public transport rather than altitude. For more lowland ideas, see our Netherlands hiking routes.

Route Overview

The current route is a Woerden–Woerden loop, officially re-established in 2023, and is waymarked both directions with yellow-red Dutch long-distance markers. From Woerden it threads the open countryside held between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht without entering their centres. Key places and transport points include IJsselstein, Vlist, Ouderkerk aan den IJssel, the edges of Schiedam and Delft, Zoetermeer, Zoeterwoude, Alphen aan den Rijn, Aarlanderveen, the Nieuwkoopse Plassen and Woerdense Verlaat. Expect old towpaths, dike-top paths, church paths and farm tracks. If you like flat Dutch heritage walking, compare the Amstel River Trail, the longer Floris V Trail and the coastal Dutch Coastal Path (Hollands Kustpad).

How the Groene Hart Pad Became a Woerden Loop

The Groene Hart Pad was created as streekpad SP 12 to cross the Green Heart: the open rural core preserved by mid-20th-century anti-sprawl planning between the Randstad cities. In autumn 2023 the path was renewed and re-routed as a circular Woerden–Woerden walk, with an updated guidebook and a dedicated start/finish point in the station park on 28 September 2023. That re-route is why current planning figures are just over 200 km and 11 stages.

Notable highlights

  • Molenviergang Aarlanderveen: A line of four polder windmills near Aarlanderveen, noted as the only working mill-gang left in the world. The mills lift water in stages from a deep polder, still using wind and sail alone.
  • Nieuwkoopse Plassen: A protected complex of peat lakes, reed beds and marsh near Woerdense Verlaat. Formed by historic peat extraction, it is now a Natura 2000 bird area on the final stages.
  • Woerden: The start and finish of the loop, billed as the capital of the Green Heart. The official Woerden–Woerden start/finish point was marked in the station park in 2023.
  • Historic towns Schiedam and Delft: These old Dutch towns sit at stage ends, giving the rural route useful transport access and cultural stops. Delft is known for canals and its historic centre; Schiedam for its windmills.
  • Polder bird life and peat meadows: The wet meadows of the Green Heart are key breeding grounds for meadow birds such as godwits and lapwings. Spring is the best time to notice the bird life.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is distance, not technical terrain. There is almost no climbing, but exposed polder paths can feel long in wind, rain or summer sun, and winter sections may be wet or muddy. Surfaces alternate between paved and unpaved, so footwear that handles both tarmac and farm tracks is useful. Navigation is straightforward on yellow-red waymarks, but carry the current post-2023 route line.
