The Fushimi Inari Shrine Path is a 4 km half-day loop on Mount Inari, starting at Fushimi Inari Taisha in south-east Kyoto, Japan. Allow 2–3 hours for the full round trip to the 233 m summit and back. The hike is moderate rather than technical: almost everything is stone or concrete steps, with a steady climb through torii tunnels, forest, sub-shrines and fox statues. It suits walkers who want a short, culturally rich Kyoto hike but still want to reach the mountain’s sacred high point.

Route Overview

Start and finish at Fushimi Inari Taisha, beside JR Inari Station and Keihan Fushimi-Inari Station. From the Romon main gate and Haiden, the path enters the Senbon Torii, passes Okusha Hohaisho and the Omokaru-ishi stones, then climbs via Shin-ike Pond and Mitsutsuji to Yotsutsuji. This junction is roughly halfway up, has two teahouses and gives the best view over southern Kyoto. From Yotsutsuji, a summit loop climbs past sub-shrines to Ichinomine, the 233 m high point, before returning to Yotsutsuji and descending the same lower route. For longer Japanese pilgrimage routes, compare the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi Route and Kumano Kodo Iseji Route; for another city-edge walk, see the Kobe Nunobiki Herb Garden Trail.

Fushimi Inari Taisha and Mount Inari

Fushimi Inari Taisha was formally founded in 711 CE by the Hata clan, an immigrant family from the Korean peninsula. It is the head shrine of Inari, the Shinto kami of rice and agriculture, and is also revered by merchants as a patron of business and prosperity. The shrine presides over as many as 32,000 Inari sub-shrines across Japan. The two-storey Romon main gate was donated in 1589 by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Notable highlights

  • Senbon Torii (about 800 gates): Two dense parallel rows of vermilion torii form the shrine’s most photographed corridor near the start of the climb. The wider mountain route holds roughly 10,000 torii in total.
  • Donated torii gates: Each gate is donated by a business or individual and inscribed with the donor’s name and date. They are offerings made as a wish or thanks for prosperity.
  • Yotsutsuji intersection: The main midway junction and the best viewpoint on Mount Inari, with a broad outlook over southern Kyoto. Many visitors turn back here, but the summit loop continues above it.
  • Mount Inari summit, Ichinomine (233 m): The sacred high point is marked by Kami-no-Yashiro, the upper shrine. It is a quiet pilgrimage spot rather than a panorama, as trees screen the view.
  • Okusha Hohaisho and Omokaru-ishi: This rear worship hall sits behind the Senbon Torii. The Omokaru-ishi, or “light-heavy stones”, are lifted by visitors as part of a wish ritual.
  • Fox, or kitsune, statues: Foxes are regarded as Inari’s messengers and appear throughout the shrine grounds. Many hold a key to the rice granary or a jewel in their mouths.

Challenges to expect

The difficulty is mainly the relentless steps: the route is almost entirely stone and concrete, with a steady climb and descent. Surfaces can be uneven and slippery when wet. Summer in Kyoto is hot and very humid, with temperatures up to about 35°C, so start early and carry water. The lower torii tunnels can be extremely crowded; sunrise or after dusk is quieter.
