The Zingaro Nature Reserve Trail is the 7 km one-way Sentiero Costiero through Riserva Naturale Orientata dello Zingaro on Sicily’s north-west coast, between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo. This moderate coastal walk suits hikers who want a short full-day route with rocky paths, limestone cliffs, Mediterranean scrub and swim stops at clear-water coves. It is not a mountain trek: the path stays low, with modest undulation and no roads inside the reserve. For more routes in the country, see our Italy hiking guide.

Route Overview

The route is a point-to-point coastal path, walkable in either direction between the South/Scopello entrance and the North/San Vito Lo Capo entrance. South to north, the signed path passes Cala Capreria, Cala del Varo, Cala della Disa, Cala Berretta, Cala Marinella, Grotta dell’Uzzo, Cala dell’Uzzo and Cala Tonnarella dell’Uzzo before the northern exit. The walking itself takes roughly 2 to 2.5 hours one way, or 4 to 5 hours as a round trip with swimming and cove stops. There are no shops or bars inside, and no verified transport details are provided here, so plan entry, exit and return logistics before starting. If you like coastal routes, compare the Cinque Terre Coastal Trail or the Cilento Coast Trail.

How Zingaro Became Sicily’s First Nature Reserve

Riserva dello Zingaro was established on 6 May 1981 under Sicilian Regional Law 98/81, becoming Sicily’s first nature reserve. Its protection followed a major grassroots protest on 18 May 1980, when around 3,000 people marched along the coast to oppose a planned road between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo. The project was halted, leaving the coastline road-free. Today, old shepherds’ and farmers’ trails, restored stone farmhouses and tonnara/watchtower heritage remain part of the landscape.

Notable highlights

  • Grotta dell’Uzzo: A prehistoric cave near Cala dell’Uzzo, known for evidence of early human settlement in Sicily, including Palaeolithic and Mesolithic/Neolithic occupation.
  • Cala dell’Uzzo and Cala Tonnarella dell’Uzzo: Two popular northern coves with pebble shores, cliffs and clear turquoise water, making them natural swimming stops on the coastal path.
  • Dwarf fan palm (Chamaerops humilis): Europe’s only native palm, locally known as palma nana, grows in large stands here; the reserve protects around 650 plant species, many rare or endemic.
  • Birdlife: At least 39 bird species nest in the reserve, including peregrine falcon, common kestrel and buzzard; watch for raptors over the limestone cliffs.
  • Reserve museums: Small rural-life and natural-history museums in restored stone buildings explain the area’s farming heritage and ecology; entry is included with the reserve ticket.
  • Car-free coastline: The trail follows roughly 7 km of road-free Tyrrhenian coast, a rare undeveloped stretch of Sicilian shoreline.

Challenges to expect

The coastal path is well marked and firm, but it is rocky and uneven in places, with narrow cliff sections and little shade. Summer is hot, exposed and busy, so carry water, food and sun protection. Closed-toe footwear is required by the reserve. There is no accommodation, overnight stay, shop or bar inside; facilities are basic, with drinking-water fountains, picnic spots and small museums near the main calas and entrances.
