The Peleaga Peak Summit Trail is a hard 12 km day hike to Vârful Peleaga (2,509 m), the highest peak in the Retezat Mountains of Romania’s Southern Carpathians. Inside Retezat National Park, the classic route climbs from Cabana Pietrele or Poiana Pelegii via Bucura Lake, then finishes on steep scree, boulders and a rocky summit ridge. Route Overview

This is best treated as an out-and-back summit day, starting and finishing at Cabana Pietrele or the Poiana Pelegii trailhead. The usual line follows the blue band/stripe towards Bucura Lake, Romania’s largest glacial lake, then turns onto the yellow cross for the climb through Bucura saddle (Curmătura Bucurei), Colții Pelegii and the final rocky push to Peleaga summit. Most hikers descend the same Bucura corridor, though a blue-dot variant can return past Tăul Pelegii. Transport details are not specified in the verified brief. Peleaga and Retezat National Park

Vârful Peleaga has long been the classic summit objective in the Retezat, described locally as the peak “climbed by everyone” from children to older walkers. The wider Retezat landscape became Romania’s first national park in 1935, protecting glacial lakes, old-growth forest and chamois habitat. It was later designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, adding international recognition to one of the Southern Carpathians’ best-known alpine areas.

Notable highlights

Peleaga summit (2,509 m): The highest point in the Retezat Mountains and the 7th highest point in Romania. From the top you look across glacial cirques, lakes and the surrounding Southern Carpathians.
Bucura Lake: Romania’s largest glacial lake and the main staging point below the Peleaga climb. It is also one of the designated wild-camping areas on the route.
Colții Pelegii: A jagged rocky section near the top of the approach ridge. This is the steepest, most exposed part of the hike and needs careful foot placement.
Tăul Pelegii (Peleaga Lake): A small glacial tarn in the cirque beneath the peak. It is passed on the blue-dot alternative descent.
Păpușa and Custura views: From Peleaga you can see neighbouring Păpușa peak (2,508 m) and the Custura ridge, giving a clear sense of the Retezat high crest.
Retezat National Park: Romania’s first national park and a UNESCO biosphere reserve, known for its glacial lakes and protected alpine terrain.

Challenges to expect

Expect a long, exposed mountain day with around 1,100 m of ascent, depending on start point. The main difficulties are loose scree, boulder fields and the steep rocky section near Colții Pelegii. Navigation is waymarked, but you need to follow the change from blue band/stripe to yellow cross carefully. The Bucura–Peleaga section is closed in winter because of high avalanche risk.
