The Papuk Nature Park Loop is an approximately 17.5 km moderate circular day-hike in Papuk Nature Park, a forested UNESCO Global Geopark in Slavonia, eastern Croatia. Starting and finishing in Velika, it links medieval Velika castle ruins, the Lapjak ridge, Jankovac Forest Park and Skakavac waterfall on forest paths, dirt tracks and rocky sections. Allow roughly 5–8 hours plus stops. It suits hikers wanting a substantial but non-technical mountain walk in Croatia; note that Papuk peak (953 m) is an optional separate spur, not the standard loop high point.

Route Overview

Most walkers start in Velika, on Papuk’s southern side between Požega and Virovitica, and use the park’s marked trail network to make a circuit via Velika castle ruins, Lapjak and Jankovac. This is not a single officially branded route: the closest mapped versions are the Velika–Lapjak–Jankovac circuit and the Stari Grad Velika–Tauber’s Rocks loop. At Jankovac, walkers usually detour onto the short Grof educational trail for Skakavac waterfall, lakes, springs and Mountain Lodge Jankovac. Velika is the practical trailhead and is about 2.5 hours by road from Zagreb. For a shorter Jankovac-focused walk, see the Jankovac Forest Trail; for another inland Croatian mountain route, compare the Ivanščica Mountain Trail; and for a contrasting waterfall walk, the Krka Waterfalls Trail.

Papuk’s Geology, Castles and Jankovac

Papuk is a “Pannonian island mountain”, formed from land that once stood as an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea. Its rocks include some of the oldest in Croatia, and nearby Rupnica became Croatia’s first protected geological monument in 1948. Papuk became Croatia’s first geopark in 2007 and a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015. The route also passes medieval Velika castle, linked to the region’s Ottoman-war defences, and Jankovac Forest Park, developed from 1860 by Count Josip Janković.

Notable highlights

  • Jankovac Forest Park (about 475 m): A sheltered upland valley with two small lakes, springs and Mountain Lodge Jankovac. It is the natural focal point of the circuit and has been a protected park-forest since 1955.
  • Skakavac waterfall (roughly 30 m): The main waterfall at Jankovac and the highest in Slavonia. It is reached on the short Grof educational boardwalk and is strongest in spring.
  • Velika castle ruins / Stari grad: A 13th-century fortress on the Lapjak ridge above Velika. It adds a clear historical waypoint early or late in the circuit, depending on direction.
  • Papuk peak (953 m): The highest summit in Slavonia and the park’s namesake. It is not normally on the core Velika–Jankovac loop, but can be treated as a separate optional spur from the Velika–Jankovac road.
  • Geopark geology and Rupnica: Papuk’s UNESCO Global Geopark status reflects its unusually old rocks and volcanic geology. Rupnica, nearby, is known for columnar volcanic basalt and was Croatia’s first protected geological monument.
  • Tauber’s Rocks / Tauberove stijene: A rocky viewpoint on the Stari Grad Velika–Tauber’s Rocks variant. It gives one of the more open outlooks on a walk otherwise dominated by dense forest.

Challenges to expect

Expect sustained but manageable ascent and descent on forest paths, dirt tracks and rocky, root-laced sections. After rain, mud and polished rocks can make the route slippery, especially around steeper woodland sections and stairs near Jankovac. Dense tree cover limits views and makes missed waymarks more consequential, so carry a map or GPS. Water is limited away from Jankovac; carry enough in summer heat.
