Carros de Foc is a strenuous hut-to-hut loop in Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, in the Catalan Pyrenees of Spain. Plan on about 65 km, usually 5-7 days, with roughly 9,200 m of cumulative ascent depending on routing. It suits fit hikers with mountain experience: the trail is waymarked but crosses high granite terrain, scree, boulder fields and steep passes, including Coll de Contraix at 2,748 m. This is not a casual lake walk; it is a sustained high-mountain circuit between staffed refuges.
Route Overview
Most hikers start and finish at Espot, reaching the circuit via Estany de Sant Maurici, but the loop can be joined at any of the nine refuges; Boí is the other main gateway on the western side. There is no fixed direction, so plan your stages around refuge availability and your tolerance for steep passes. Key points on the round include Port de Ratera, the lake-filled Colomers cirque, Refugi de la Restanca, Ventosa i Calvell above Estany Negre, the hard crossing of Coll de Contraix, Estany Llong, Colomina, Josep Maria Blanc and Amitges. For a gentler Spanish coastal alternative, compare the Camí de Ronda; for a longer historic route, see the GR1 Historic Trail.
How Carros de Foc Began
The route began in 1987, when the wardens of the park's nine mountain refuges linked their huts into one continuous round as a friendly challenge. It was later formalised as a marked multi-day trek around 1999 and named Carros de Foc, Catalan for Chariots of Fire. The exact reason for the name is not firmly documented, and it is unrelated to the 1981 British film with the same English title.
Notable highlights
- The nine-refuge passport challenge: The optional Carros de Foc forfait is stamped at each of the nine refuges. Completing the full set earns a recognised certificate and gives the route its classic hut-to-hut structure.
- Coll de Contraix (2,748 m): The highest pass on the circuit and one of the toughest sections. Expect a steep, rocky, near-vertical climb on loose high-mountain terrain.
- Estany de Sant Maurici and Els Encantats: The usual Espot-side start and finish area, with the lake set below the twin Els Encantats peaks. It is one of the signature views of the national park.
- Colomers cirque: A lake-filled glacial amphitheatre crossed near Refugi de Colomèrs. It is notable for its dense cluster of interconnected high mountain lakes.
- Aigüestortes glacial lakes: The park is known for twisting meltwater streams, waterfalls and roughly 200+ glacial lakes. The circuit repeatedly moves between lakeshores, slabs, meadows and granite passes.
Challenges to expect
Expect sustained ascent and descent, rough granite paths, scree, boulder fields, slabs and exposed high passes. Coll de Contraix is the standout physical and technical challenge, with loose rock and a very steep climb. Snow can linger into early summer, and July-August refuge beds need advance booking. Most refuges are mostly cash-only, so carry enough cash for hut costs and extras.

The circuit begins at Espot, ascending through lush forest to the magnificent Estany de Sant Maurici lake with the backdrop of the Els Encantats peaks. From the lake, the trail climbs steadily along well-maintained paths, weaving past waterfalls and alpine meadows before reaching the panoramic Refugi Amitges. Expect a mix of dirt and rocky terrain as you transition into more rugged landscapes.
Leaving Amitges, the route follows undulating trails past several high-altitude lakes and skirts the foot of impressive granite ridges. The path ascends to the Port de Ratera, one of the highest passes on the circuit, before descending into the picturesque cirque of Colomers. Here, you pass multiple turquoise lakes before reaching Refugi Colomers, nestled at lake’s edge.
This section is characterized by remote terrain and dramatic scenery. The route traverses several small valleys and crosses rocky passes, with opportunities to spot alpine flora and fauna. After passing the Restanca hut and climbing the Coll de Crestada, you'll follow wild, rocky paths to reach Ventosa i Calvell, situated above the vivid blue Estany Negre lake.
Departing Ventosa i Calvell, the route climbs to the Collado de Contraix, a rocky and often windy pass. The descent is steep and technical at times, passing through stony ground and meadows as you approach the serene Estany Llong valley. The day finishes at Refugi Estany Llong, an inviting hut at the head of a beautiful glacial valley.
The final day traverses scenic alpine meadows and forests, with a gentle ascent to the Coll de Monestero. A long descent follows, passing by the Mallafrè hut, before reaching familiar sights near Estany de Sant Maurici. The loop closes with the gradual return to Espot, marking the completion of the Carros de Foc circuit.
