The Blackpool Illuminations Trail is a 9 km, easy, point-to-point promenade walk from Starr Gate to Bispham on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. It is a flat, paved urban coastal stroll, usually done in one evening during the autumn Illuminations rather than as a wilderness hike. Allow about 2–3 hours at a leisurely pace. It suits families, pushchairs and wheelchairs, with the main cautions being crowds, wind and wet paving.

Route Overview

Start at Starr Gate, the southern end of the Illuminations and the heritage tramway, then follow the continuous seafront promenade north. The route passes Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Sandcastle Waterpark, South Pier, the Golden Mile, Central Pier, Blackpool Tower, the Comedy Carpet, North Pier and Gynn Square before finishing at Bispham, near Red Bank Road and the cliff-top tableaux. Navigation is simple: keep to the promenade beside the Irish Sea. Trams run the full length, so you can return easily or shorten the walk. A brief history of Blackpool Illuminations

Blackpool Illuminations date to 18 September 1879, when eight carbon arc lamps were shown on the promenade as “artificial sunshine”. The first modern decorative display followed in 1912, when garland bulbs lit Princess Parade for a royal visit by Princess Louise. Animated cliff tableaux were added at Bispham in 1932, helping create the present Starr Gate-to-Bispham display. The lights have only been cancelled for the two World Wars, returning in 1949, and remain a free annual attraction.

Notable highlights

Blackpool Tower and the Comedy Carpet: The floodlit Tower is the central landmark of the seafront, with the Comedy Carpet at its base: a granite public artwork filled with jokes, songs and catchphrases from British comedy.

The Golden Mile: This busy stretch between North Pier and South Pier has the densest mix of lights, arcades, food stalls and seafront amusements on the walk.

The three piers: North, Central and South piers project into the Irish Sea, giving classic views of the lights reflected on the water and plenty of places to pause.

Bispham cliff-top tableaux: The northern finale of the route is a raised cliff-side section lined with large static illuminated scenes, including animated displays that have run here since 1932.

Blackpool Pleasure Beach: Near the Starr Gate start, this historic amusement park and its rides make the southern approach feel bright and busy from the first steps.

Illuminated heritage trams: Decorated feature trams run along the promenade during the season, so you can ride part of the route or use the tramway for the return.

Challenges to expect

This is an easy walk physically: flat, paved and almost entirely at sea level. The challenges are urban rather than remote. Expect heavy crowds at peak Illuminations times, especially around the Golden Mile, piers and Tower. The promenade is exposed to Irish Sea wind, and rain can make paving slippery. There is no formal trail waymarking, but navigation is straightforward because the route follows the continuous seafront promenade.
