Volcano Hikes: How to Choose the Right Route
Choosing between volcano hikes
Start with the level of commitment you want. The shortest options here are day walks such as the easy 3.5 km Krafla Lava Fields Trail, the 4.5 km Hverfjall Crater Loop and the 6.5 km Reykjadalur Hot Springs Trail. They suit hikers who want volcanic terrain without taking on a full mountain day.
If your goal is a summit or high volcanic ridge, expect a harder outing. Mount Etna, Mount Fuji, Mount Kirishima and Mount Asama are all hard one-day routes, with out-and-back or point-to-point formats that make pacing and transport important. La Palma’s Volcano Route is also a hard day, but its point-to-point ridge line gives it a very different feel from a single-cone climb.
For multi-day volcanic walking, choose by logistics as much as distance. Laugavegur is a 55 km, 4-day point-to-point trek through Iceland’s Southern Highlands, while the Aeolian Islands Trek links separate day-walks by boat rather than following one continuous waymarked trail. The GR30 offers a 198 km loop in France’s Massif Central, and the GR131 is a 560 km Canary Islands traverse using inter-island ferries.
Terrain, access and fitness
Volcanic routes are not all black rock and summit cones. This list includes caldera rims and lakeshores in the Azores, geothermal ground in Iceland, exposed volcanic ridge walking in the Canaries, forested volcanic approaches in Japan and mountainous Arctic terrain in Iceland. Check the trail type before choosing: loops simplify planning, while point-to-point routes need transport at both ends.
The hardest routes here often combine distance, ascent, exposure or high mountain conditions. Fuji’s Yoshida Trail is the main summer route to Japan’s highest point, Snæfellsjökull is listed as a guided glacier-capped stratovolcano climb, and Etna is route-dependent. For volcano hikes, matching the route to your fitness and logistics is as important as choosing the most famous crater.
