The Zavižan to Alan Trail is a 16 km, 1-day point-to-point hike in Northern Velebit National Park, Croatia. It is the first and most popular stage of the Premužić Trail, running from Zavižan mountain hut to Alan mountain hut along a hand-built drystone path. The walk is moderate: remote and exposed, but engineered with gentle gradients. It suits hikers who want high Velebit scenery, karst rock formations, forest, meadows and Adriatic views without a technically demanding mountain route.
Route Overview
Start at Zavižan mountain hut, at 1,594 m below Vučjak peak, beside Croatia’s oldest and highest mountain weather station. The route heads south on the Premužić Trail through Northern Velebit National Park, passing the Velebit Botanical Garden near the start, Rossijeva koliba roughly midway and the Rožanski and Hajdučki kukovi karst formations before finishing at Alan mountain hut. This is a point-to-point walk, so plan onward travel or pickup from Alan; no verified transport details are provided in the brief. For a longer Croatian mountain-and-coast objective, compare it with the Adriatic Long-Distance Trail, or for island hiking see the Cres Island Coastal Path.
History of the Premužić Trail
The Premužić Trail was conceived and built by forestry engineer and mountaineer Ante Premužić. Construction ran from 1930 to summer 1933, with one season delayed by a funding shortfall. It was financed by the Sušak Forest Directorate, the Croatian Mountaineering Association and the Sava Banate administration. The full 57 km trail runs from Oltari to Baške Oštarije, and its entire length was protected as a cultural asset of national importance in 2009.
Notable highlights
- Premužić drystone engineering: The path was hand-laid in mortar-free drystone between 1930 and 1933, allowing it to sit naturally in the limestone landscape. Its gentle, engineered gradient is a major reason this high mountain route feels manageable.
- Velebit Botanical Garden: Founded in 1967 beside the Zavižan hut, this high-altitude garden showcases Velebit’s endemic flora. It makes an easy and worthwhile addition before starting the ridge walk.
- Rožanski and Hajdučki kukovi: The trail skirts these jagged, deeply karstified rock towers, among the wildest parts of Northern Velebit. They are strict nature reserves, so hikers view them from the path rather than entering them.
- Rossijeva koliba (Rossi’s shelter): This small stone shelter sits roughly halfway along the route, about two hours’ walk from Zavižan. It is a traditional rest stop and has been renovated to host a handful of walkers.
- Adriatic panoramas: Near the higher, more open sections around Alan, the route opens towards the Adriatic and the Kvarner islands, including Krk, Rab, Pag, Goli otok and Prvić.
Challenges to expect
The walking is not steep, but the setting is remote, exposed and high for Croatia. Expect a narrow stone mountain path, karst terrain and limited shelter between huts. Snow can linger into late spring, and sudden cold, rain, fog and fierce bora winds are possible even in summer. Alan hut is staffed only seasonally, and a Northern Velebit National Park entrance ticket is required. For another Croatian mountain option, see the Ivanščica Mountain Trail.
