The Brač Island Summit Trail is an 11 km out-and-back day hike from Bol, on Brač in Croatia, to Vidova Gora (778 m). It is a moderate half-day climb, not a multi-day trek: technically straightforward and waymarked, but with about 750 m of sustained ascent from sea level. Go for the high Adriatic-island summit, the view down to Zlatni Rat, and a compact mountain workout that suits fit walkers with limited time.
Route Overview
Start in Bol on the south coast of Brač, near the upper edge of town by the Dominican monastery / quarry road around Ul. Donje Podbarje and Bračka cesta. The route climbs the Vela staza, often called the old Roman road, through pine forest, limestone switchbacks and increasingly open rocky ground to the Vidova Gora summit plateau. The turnaround point is the 778 m summit, with the Zlatni Rat beach spit directly below. Return to Bol the same way. A road reaches near the summit from the inland/Nerežišća side, so you may meet drivers near the top; the listed hike is still the Bol out-and-back. For other island and coastal walking ideas, compare the Hvar Island Ridge Trail on the neighbouring island, the shorter Marjan Hill Trail above Split, or the long-distance Adriatic Long-Distance Trail.
History of Vidova Gora
Vidova Gora is named after Saint Vitus, or Sveti Vid; the cult is widely linked with a Christianised echo of the old Slavic thunder-god Perun, once associated with high places. Near the summit are the remains of a 13th-century Romanesque church of St Vitus and traces of an Illyrian hillfort with double dry-stone defensive walls. A mountain hut was built here in the 1935–36 season, and Brač itself is known for its white limestone, quarried since antiquity.
Notable highlights
Vidova Gora summit (778 m): The highest point of Brač and of any Adriatic island. The main reward is the aerial view over Bol and straight down to Zlatni Rat.
Zlatni Rat beach: This famous pebble spit, also called the Golden Horn, juts into the sea at Bol. From the cliff edge of Vidova Gora it is the signature view of the hike.
Church of St Vitus ruins: Remains of a 13th-century Romanesque chapel stand near the summit. They connect the peak’s name with Sveti Vid, or Saint Vitus.
Summit stone cross: A roughly 12 m white Brač-stone cross marks the plateau. It is a clear landmark near the top of the route.
Illyrian hillfort remains: Traces of double dry-stone walls near the summit point to a prehistoric defensive lookout over the Adriatic.
Summit konoba: A seasonal tavern by the car park may serve Brač specialities such as spit-roast lamb, prosciutto and sheep’s cheese. Do not rely on it outside the main season.
Challenges to expect
The difficulty is physical rather than technical: expect a relentless climb of roughly 750 m from sea level, loose gravel, rocky limestone and exposed upper sections with little shade. In summer, start early because Dalmatian midday heat can be intense. Carry water from Bol and do not assume the summit konoba is open. Navigation is helped by red-and-white waymarks, but the terrain is still stony and slow in places.
