Sedlo to Žabljak Ridge Trail: Bobotov Kuk Traverse
The Sedlo to Žabljak Ridge Trail is a hard 13 km point-to-point day hike in Durmitor National Park, Montenegro. It climbs Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m), Durmitor’s highest peak, from Sedlo Pass before descending through high valleys towards Žabljak, commonly via Black Lake. Expect loose limestone, scree, exposed ledges and a short cabled scramble near the summit. This is for confident mountain hikers with a head for heights, not a casual lake walk.
Route Overview
Start at the Sedlo Pass (Prevoj Sedlo) car park, about 14 km from Žabljak by road, and walk one way back to Žabljak. The route crosses high plateau and meadow terrain towards the Lokvice saddle and valley, then continues to Velika Previja and the summit of Bobotov Kuk. The descent passes the Ledena pećina area and commonly continues towards Black Lake (Crno jezero) before finishing in Žabljak. This is the linear alternative to the Bobotov Kuk Summit Trail, so you need transport to Sedlo and accommodation or onward travel in Žabljak. Durmitor’s High Pastures and Bobotov Kuk
The route lies inside Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Montenegro’s Dinaric Alps. Its limestone peaks, ridges and glacial lakes were shaped by Ice Age glaciers. Bobotov Kuk’s first recorded ascent was by Austrian cartographer Oscar Baumann in 1883. The high meadows around the route have long been used by shepherds, whose seasonal stone-and-wood katuns still mark the grazing landscape. Sedlo Pass also served as a transport link between the coast and Montenegro’s interior.
Notable highlights
- Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m): The highest peak in Durmitor National Park and the high point of this traverse. The final approach includes exposed terrain and a short cabled scramble.
- Cabled summit scramble: Fixed metal cables protect the steep final section below the summit. They are a safety aid rather than a full via ferrata, but the exposure is real.
- Sedlo Pass (Prevoj Sedlo, 1,907 m): The start point and highest paved road in Montenegro. It gives immediate access to Durmitor’s open high country.
- Lokvice valley and saddle: A high glacial basin with shepherd huts and small ponds. It is one of the key transition areas between Sedlo and the summit ridge.
- Black Lake / Crno jezero: Durmitor’s largest and best-known glacial lake, set in spruce forest below Međed peak. It is a common finish point before walking into Žabljak.
Challenges to expect
Expect a full mountain day with no accommodation or resupply on the route. The walking is mostly above the treeline on rocky limestone, loose scree and sharp ridges, with exposed ledges near Bobotov Kuk. Afternoon thunderstorms, lingering early-season snow and cold wind on the summit can make conditions serious. Red-and-white waymarks help, but visibility can drop quickly in poor weather.
