Frequently Asked Questions

What is HikeList?

HikeList is a curated directory of long-distance, officially waymarked hiking trails from around the world. Think of it like TripAdvisor, but specifically for thru-hikes and walking holidays — from a two-day taste of long-distance walking to a month-long pilgrimage. The aim is to make the research phase of planning a hike much easier.

What kind of trails will I find?

Well-marked, multi-day trails that are officially recognised and maintained. You won’t find every path, shortcut or summit scramble here — no backyard loops and no unmarked bushwhacks. Just honest-to-goodness long walks worth taking.

How are trails chosen and kept up to date?

Each route is researched individually, using a mix of human curation, machine learning, and community reviews to keep things accurate and current. Distances, durations, terrain and seasons are compiled from official sources wherever possible.

Can I rely on the information for safety?

Please treat HikeList as a starting point, not a substitute for proper preparation. Trail conditions change and mistakes can happen, so always check official trail authorities, up-to-date maps and local sources before you set off. You use the information on this site at your own risk — see our Terms of Service for the full disclaimer.

How do I find the right hike?

Use the filters on the home page to narrow trails by country, distance, duration, terrain, difficulty, season and more. You can switch between a visual grid and a sortable list, search by name, or browse a destination through its country guide.

Is HikeList free? Do I need an account?

Yes, HikeList is completely free to browse, and you don’t need an account to use it.

Can I suggest a trail or report a mistake?

Absolutely — that’s one of the best ways to help. If you know a great trail we’re missing, or you’ve spotted something out of date, get in touch and we’ll take a look.

Which countries does HikeList cover?

HikeList is just getting started, with strong coverage across the UK and Europe and more being added all the time. The long-term goal is to cover every country with great long-distance hiking.

Who’s behind HikeList?

HikeList is an independent project built by Adam McIntyre — a lifelong long-distance hiker. You can read the full story on the About page.
