The Pálava Hills Path is a 14 km, one-day, moderate ridge walk in South Moravia, Czechia. It follows the red-marked KČT tourist trail from Dolní Věstonice beside the Nové Mlýny reservoir to Mikulov, crossing white Jurassic limestone summits, castle ruins, vineyard slopes and protected steppe habitat. With about 550 m of ascent and several short, steep rocky sections, it suits fit walkers wanting a compact point-to-point hike rather than a multi-day trek.
Route Overview
Walk south from Dolní Věstonice, climbing vineyard terraces above the Nové Mlýny reservoir to the Dívčí hrady / Děvičky castle ruins and on to Děvín, the 550 m high point of the Pálava Hills. The red-marked route then drops towards Klentnice, passes Sirotčí hrádek and Tabulová hora, and continues by the Turold nature reserve and caves before finishing in Mikulov town centre or at Mikulov train station. It is a point-to-point day hike, so plan your return from Mikulov. For longer Czech walking ideas, compare the Czech Greenways, the Hussite Trail or the Golden Trail of the Czech Paradise.
Castles, Prehistory and Protected Pálava
The walk links several layers of South Moravian history. Dolní Věstonice is known for a 30,000-year-old mammoth-hunter settlement and the Venus of Dolní Věstonice, one of the oldest known ceramic figurines. On the ridge, Dívčí hrady / Děvičky and Sirotčí hrádek are both 13th-century castle ruins built into the limestone landscape. The wider Pálava has been protected as CHKO Pálava since 1976, became a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1986, and was later incorporated into the Lower Morava biosphere reserve.
Notable highlights
- Děvín (550 m): The highest summit of the Pálava Hills and the main viewpoint of the walk, looking over South Moravian vineyards, the Nové Mlýny reservoir and towards Austria.
- Dívčí hrady / Děvičky castle ruins: 13th-century Gothic ruins above Dolní Věstonice, forming one of the best-known landmarks on the northern Pálava skyline.
- Sirotčí hrádek: The “Orphans’ Castle”, a ruined 13th-century stronghold dramatically set on two limestone crags above Klentnice.
- Dolní Věstonice: A major prehistoric archaeological site, known for a mammoth-hunter settlement and the Venus of Dolní Věstonice ceramic figurine.
- Tabulová hora (459 m): A flat-topped limestone table mountain with a hill-fort history from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age.
- Mikulov: A historic wine town with a hilltop château, Holy Hill and former Jewish quarter; it is the natural finish and main base for the route.
Challenges to expect
The distance is modest, but the ridge is not flat. Expect several short, steep ascents and descents over rocky limestone, with slippery sections after rain. Much of the route is exposed, and the pale limestone can feel hot in midsummer. Navigation is straightforward on the red KČT waymarks, but stay on marked paths inside the Pálava Protected Landscape Area. There is no camping in the reserve.
